A very shocking and revolutionary administrative decision has come out from Bengaluru city, which is called the Silicon Valley of India. In a major relief to thousands of gig workers working for various food and quick-commerce delivery apps, the Bengaluru Traffic Police has freed them from the traditional system of fines. However, this should not be interpreted as a free hand in any way; Rather, the police have instead adopted a unique psychological and practical method, which will completely stop these delivery partners from being careless on the roads.
4 hours compulsory lecture: The punishment will be more valuable than the money of the challan
According to the official information shared by Bengaluru Joint Police Commissioner MN Kartik Reddy, this new system has been implemented with immediate effect in all 53 traffic police stations of the city. From now on, if any delivery boy is caught jumping signal, driving on the wrong side or driving rashly, the police will not impose any cash fine on him. Instead, the caught rider will be taken straight to the police station, where he will have to attend a mandatory class (Traffic Rules Lecture) for a full 4 hours. In this special session they will be educated in detail about road safety, traffic rules and importance of human life. Police believe that the loss of 4 hours will prove to be a bigger lesson than any financial penalty for these riders, who save time by making quick deliveries, because during this period they will not be able to deliver even a single order.
4,000 cases registered in 3 days: Youth coming from small towns were burdened with heavy fines
Top traffic police officials have also highlighted the social and economic aspects behind this tough decision. If we look at the statistics, riders associated with delivery apps have been found to be at the forefront in violating traffic rules on the busy roads of Bengaluru, which can be gauged from the fact that in the last three days, more than 4,000 such cases have been registered in the city. According to the Police Commissioner, most of the youth working in these apps come from small towns and rural areas of the country and work day and night just to earn their livelihood. In such a situation, repeatedly imposing huge financial fines on them was like breaking their spine and it was not providing any permanent solution to the problem. This new system will not put additional financial pressure on them, but the fear of losing time will force them to follow the rules.
Loophole of Yulu bike: Police’s new crackdown on riders without license and number plate
There is also a huge technical reason hidden behind the preparation of this special policy. These days, most of the delivery boys in Bengaluru are extensively using the very popular electric ‘Yulu Electric Bikes’ available on rent. These low-speed two-wheelers do not require any valid driving license (DL) to drive, nor do they have conventional commercial number plates. Under pressure to deliver parcels within the deadline, Yulu riders often drive on the footpath or ignore traffic signals. Due to lack of number plate and license, it became technically impossible to issue online e-challan on them through digital cameras. To close this legal loophole, now the police is going to catch them on-spot and make them sit in a lecture room for 4 hours, which will ensure the safety of the common pedestrians walking on the streets of Bengaluru to a great extent.
