The festival of Diwali is over, but its glory is still visible on the treasury of Delhi government. On the occasion of Diwali, the people of Delhi have made record breaking purchases of liquor, due to which the government has made huge profits. Compared to last year, there has been a big jump of 15% in the income from sale of liquor on Diwali this year.
Earned Rs 600 crore in 15 days
A senior Delhi government official said that in the 15 days just before Diwali, liquor worth about Rs 600 crore was sold from government shops. This figure is also special because during the same period last year this earning was Rs 516 crore. That means this year people bought more liquor worth about Rs 84 crore.
What do government figures say?
Delhi’s Excise Department is very excited with this bumper earning. Officials are hopeful of easily surpassing their revenue target of Rs 6,000 crore this fiscal. This income is likely to increase further due to sales on New Year.
Statistics show that in the first half (6 months) of this financial year alone, the government has earned Rs 4,192 crore from the tax on liquor, which was Rs 3,731 crore at the same time last year.
crores of bottles sold
In the three months from April to June alone, Delhi government agencies sold around 17 crore bottles of liquor, earning more than Rs 2,662 crore. This is one crore bottles more than last year.
Let us tell you that the entire work of sale of liquor in Delhi is handled by only four government agencies (DSIIDC, DTTDC, DCSC, and DCCWWS), which run more than 700 government contracts in the city. This Diwali, a huge crowd of customers was seen at these shops, which has directly benefited the government treasury.
