Nowadays, a very emotional story of 56-year-old Manoj, a resident of Noida, is becoming increasingly viral on the social media platform LinkedIn. After giving 14 precious years of his life to a big corporate company, Manoj suddenly became a victim of lay-off. Today he is forced to work as a delivery partner on the streets to feed himself and his family. His ordeal has sparked a serious debate on the employment of older people and the attitude of corporate companies in the Indian job market.
A normal delivery and the pain of 14 years of work got exposed
This whole story came to light when social entrepreneur Kiran Verma booked a delivery partner through ‘Porter’ app to send an important document in Noida. Kiran thought it would be a normal delivery, but he was surprised when Manoj, a 56-year-old man with white hair, came in front of him. Unable to climb the stairs, Manoj had a strange helplessness on his face. During the conversation, Manoj smilingly said to Kiran, “Son, there was no work all day today, I was just sitting waiting for this order.”
Was an administrator in Tata AIA, lost job in recession of 2023
According to Kiran Verma’s LinkedIn post, Manoj told that he was working on a good post in the administration department of the famous company ‘Tata AIA Life Insurance’ till the year 2023. He had given his loyal services there for 14 consecutive years. But in 2023, when the storm of lay-offs hit the corporate world, they were suddenly shown the way out. After losing his job, Manoj gave interviews in dozens of companies, but due to his 56 years of age and age-related health problems, no company showed interest in hiring him.
“We are like curry leaves of vegetable…” The bitter truth of corporate
When Kiran asked him about his experience of suddenly losing his job, Manoj gave an example that touched the heart of every working person. Manoj compared old and loyal employees to curry leaves and said, “Son, when we make vegetables, we add curry leaves first for taste, but when the vegetable is cooked and people eat it, the first thing they do is take out those curry leaves and throw them away.” His point was clear that companies make full use of experienced people, but when a crisis arises, they are the first ones to throw them out like flies in the milk.
Debate on gig economy and ageism on social media
This post of Kiran Verma instantly went viral on LinkedIn, on which thousands of professionals, HR and recruiters are giving their feedback. ‘Porter’ company itself has also commented on this matter and praised the passion and hard work of its delivery partner Manoj. Social media users say that this story shows the most cruel and real face of India’s job market, where after a certain age there is no place left for experienced professionals and they are forced to sweat in jobs like Gig Economy i.e. delivery and driving.
