The world’s deadliest supersonic cruise missile ‘BrahMos’, developed by a joint venture between India and Russia, has proved its lethality in the global defense market. The news coming from the corridors of geopolitics is extremely shocking. Till now, the Muslim majority countries which were blindly inclined towards the weapons of China or Western countries, now seem desperate to include India’s BrahMos missile system in their military fleet to protect their sovereignty. From the waves of the South China Sea to the sandstorms of the Persian Gulf, the race to acquire this missile has proved that India has now firmly established itself as a large and reliable defense exporter in the world.
Geopolitical equation changed from South China Sea to Persian Gulf
The countries of South-East Asia, troubled by China’s aggressive expansionism and bullying, are now looking for the shield of their security in BrahMos. Ignoring all the diplomatic pressures from Beijing, many countries are in the queue to finalize this mega deal with India:
-
Philippines (first foreign buyer): In the year 2022, India signed its first historic defense deal with the Philippines worth $375 million. Under this, the delivery of three batteries of shore-based anti-ship variant of BrahMos has also started, whose excellent performance has been highly praised by the Philippines Army.
-
Indonesia and Malaysia: To stop the increasing infiltration of the Chinese Navy, both these countries need a ‘game changer’ weapon that can push Beijing on the backfoot. Malaysia is showing keen interest in the air-launched variant of BrahMos for its Su-30MKM fighter jets.
-
Big deal possible with Vietnam: Talks are in the final stages with Vietnam on a deal worth around $450 to $700 million, which may include missile systems for both the Army and Navy. This deal has also got the green signal from Russia.
-
Other contenders: About 14 to 17 countries, including Thailand, Singapore and Brunei, have expressed their desire to make this missile a part of their army.
If we talk about the Persian Gulf, then the richest and strategically important Gulf countries of the Middle East like United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia have also become fans of BrahMos. They are considering BrahMos as the most perfect weapon to protect their maritime trade routes and oil installations amid attacks by Iran-backed rebels and regional instability. Apart from these, Qatar, Oman and Egypt are also involved in this race.
After all, why is it impossible to stop BrahMos? Know its features
BrahMos is not just a missile, but the ‘Brahmastra’ of the modern battlefield, which no country currently has the solution to. Some of its technical features make it different and dangerous in the world:
-
Three times the speed of sound: This missile flies at a supersonic speed of Mach 2.8 to Mach 3.0 (about three times faster than the speed of sound). Due to this amazing speed, no existing air defense system in the world can intercept (destroy) it in mid-air.
-
‘Stealth’ art of dodging radar: BrahMos has advanced ‘stealth technology’ and ‘sea-skimming’ capability. It flies at a height of just a few meters from the sea or land surface, due to which enemy radars cannot detect it until it directly hits the target and causes devastation.
-
Fire & Forget: It can be fired from all four platforms i.e. land, air, sea and submarine. Once launched, it finds its own path and destroys the target.
Dominance increased due to ‘Operation Sindoor’, China-Pakistan’s panic intensified
The global demand for BrahMos has not increased overnight, but behind it is its excellent track record of impeccable accuracy. During the ‘Operation Vermillion’ (test) conducted by the Indian Army, the way this missile penetrated the tightest security cordons and destroyed deep bunkers, it surprised military experts all over the world. This live demonstration also removed the doubts of those countries who were earlier skeptical about this technology.
China and Pakistan are deeply shocked by this major diplomatic and strategic success of India. Pakistan tried many times to spread fake news and run propaganda regarding BrahMos navigation system in international forums. At the same time, China tried to scare Asian countries through its government media. But his lie fell flat in front of BrahMos, which has more than 99% reliability. Today the situation is such that countries which were once buyers of Chinese arms are now standing in line for India’s BrahMos to teach Beijing a lesson. This missile has now become the biggest face of the global success of ‘Make in India’ and India’s strong diplomatic power.
