
A wonderful opportunity has emerged for bright and economically weaker section students across the country to pursue higher education and schooling without any financial hindrance. Online applications are being invited for dozens of scholarship schemes of various Central Ministries, UGC, AICTE and State Governments for the academic year 2026-27 on the integrated platform ‘National Scholarship Portal’ (NSP) operated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
The scholarship is open to students from pre-matriculation class 9th and 10th to class 11th-12th, ITI, Polytechnic, Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG), Medical, Engineering and PhD level researchers. OTR (One Time Registration) becomes mandatory: 14 digit permanent ID will be created through face authentication
For every student before applying for scholarship on NSP portal One-Time Registration (OTR) It is mandatory to complete. It is a 14-digit unique identification number, which remains valid for the entire academic career of the student.
Main process of OTR registration:

Aadhaar/EID Verification: Students will start registration on OTR portal through their Aadhaar number or Aadhaar Enrollment ID (EID). If the student is a minor and does not have Aadhaar, the parent’s Aadhaar can be used.

NSP OTR and Face RD App: To generate OTR, students will have to download ‘NSP OTR App’ from Google Play Store and ‘Aadhaar Face RD App’ of UIDAI.

Live Face-Authentication: Once the live face authentication is completed in front of the mobile camera, a permanent OTR number and password is sent by the system to the student’s registered mobile number.

All benefits of Single ID: Once OTR is generated, students can apply or renew the scholarship directly from the same ID without filling the basic details again and again every year.

Eligibility Criteria: Which students can apply?
Although the detailed eligibility rules of each scheme differ, the basic conditions for most central schemes are as follows:

Citizenship and educational status: Applicant must be a native citizen of India and regularly enrolled in a school, college or university recognized by UGC/AICTE/CBSE or State Education Board.

Educational qualification: Must have minimum 50% to 60% marks (as per the scheme) in the previous last passed examination (like 10th, 12th or Graduation).

The total annual income of the parents should not exceed ₹2.50 lakh for most post-matric and merit-cum-means schemes.

The upper limit of family income for PM-USP (CSSS) and Top Class College schemes can range from ₹4.50 lakh to ₹8.00 lakh per annum.

Single Merit Scheme Rules: Under the new rules (AY 2026-27), a student can avail only one ‘merit-based’ scholarship at a time and one or more ‘welfare-based’ incentives as per requirement.
Aadhaar Seeding and NPCI Mapping: Scholarship will come directly into bank account through DBT
Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and Aadhaar Payment Bridge System (APBS) are used to send the scholarship money directly to the student’s bank account securely and without any middleman.
The Ministry has clarified that it is not enough for the student’s bank account to be linked to the Aadhaar card, but it should also be linked to the National Payments Corporation of India server. ‘NPCI Aadhaar Seeded / Mapped’ It is mandatory to have. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has for the convenience of students ‘Bharat Aadhaar Seeding Enabler’ (BASE) A platform has been started, through which students can check the seeding status of their bank account sitting at home or can get it activated by visiting the nearest bank branch and Common Service Center (CSC). The account should be an active single savings account in the student’s own name rather than being a minor (joint) account.

The entire process of applying for the scholarship is completely online and free:

Step 1 (Go to portal): First of all go to the official website of National Scholarship Portal scholarships.gov.in.

Step 2 (Generate OTR): Click on ‘Apply for One Time Registration (OTR)’ on the homepage. Enter the mobile number, verify the OTP and complete the face-authentication with Aadhaar e-KYC & FaceRD app to get your 14 digit OTR number.

Avoid These Mistakes While Applying: Tips to Avoid Form Rejection
Often due to small human errors, the scholarship form of the students becomes rejected or defective. To avoid this, take some precautions:

Avoid data mismatch: Student’s name, date of birth and father’s name should be 100% identical (including spelling) in 10th mark sheet and Aadhar card.

Ensure Institution Verification: After submitting the form online, contact the nodal officer of your college and ensure that they mark your application ‘Approved’ on the portal before 15th November.

Do not give fake bank details: Many times the amount gets stuck due to closed account or limit of Jan Dhan account. Always enter active savings account only.
