A very relieving news has come from the Election Commission of India for Indian voters. In order to rectify those citizens whose names or documents were missing during the special revision and amendment campaign of the voter list, the Election Commission has extended the last date for filing claims and objections. Not only this, keeping in mind the convenience of the general public, now Booth Level Officers i.e. BLOs will themselves go door-to-door and collect the necessary documents and forms, so that the voters do not have to make rounds of the offices. This public-friendly decision of the Election Commission has brought great relief to lakhs of voters in the country, who were worried about the verification of their documents.
The Election Commission is continuously making special efforts to make the biggest festival of democracy and the electoral process transparent and error-free. In this context, the dates have been extended in view of the number of applications received under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and Voter List Revision Program in various states. Whereas earlier the time limit for filing claims and objections was limited, now with its increase, even those people whose documents could not be completed on time due to some reasons have got enough time. The main objective of the Commission is to ensure that no eligible citizen is left out in the voter list and the name of any fake or ineligible person is not included in the list.
Generally, voters had to stand in long lines near government offices or BLOs to get their names added, deleted or corrected. But this time, making the process very simple, the Election Commission has instructed the booth level officers to go door-to-door of the voters themselves and collect the forms and necessary documents. If data mismatch or any other technical flaw is found in any voter’s form, then BLOs are reaching the spot, guiding him and taking the correct documents. This door-to-door campaign is providing immense convenience, especially to the elderly, women and working people, who are now getting the opportunity to complete their election formalities from the comfort of their homes.
The Election Commission has clarified that voters who have received notices regarding matching of data or documents, there is no need to panic. This entire process is only for strong verification of data. Voters can present their correct documents like Aadhar Card, Residence Certificate and Identity Card before the BLO of their area or the concerned Electoral Registration Officer. The Commission has also directed that no voter’s name will be removed from the list without proper hearing and following the complete procedure. Due to this transparent system, the foundation of democracy is getting stronger and the confidence of the general public in the electoral system is increasing.
In any democratic country, a clear and accurate voter list is the first condition for fair elections. The extension of the deadline by the Election Commission and the door-to-door collection of documents has greatly benefited all the youth and new voters who are going to exercise their franchise for the first time. With the special camps organized at the local level and active cooperation of BLOs, citizens of even remote areas are being made aware. The direct result of this entire exercise will be that more and more voters will be able to cast their vote in the upcoming elections without any technical hindrance, which is the biggest identity of a healthy democracy.
