Why haven’t the prices of petrol and diesel changed for a long time?

You might remember, the government had made some tax cuts in May 2022, after which there has been no major change in the prices of petrol and diesel. Although the prices of crude oil keep fluctuating across the world, the prices in India remain almost stable, which has brought some relief to the common man.

How are prices decided?

The price of petrol and diesel depends on many things:

  1. Crude oil price: India buys most of its crude oil needs from other countries. If prices rise there, prices rise here too.
  2. Rupee-Dollar Game: We have to pay in dollars to buy oil. If the rupee weakens against the dollar, we have to pay more for oil.
  3. Government Tax: A major part of the price of petrol and diesel is the taxes of the central and state governments. This is why prices differ in every state.
  4. Other expenses: There is also expense in refining crude oil in the refinery and making petrol and diesel, which adds to the prices.
  5. Demand and Supply: When there is a festival or wedding season, the demand for fuel increases, which can also affect the prices.
