Arab parties plan to remove Netanyahu, announce support to the opposition

A major turning point has come amid the ongoing political turmoil in Israel. The country’s two major Arab parties have presented a unique formula to remove Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been holding the post of Prime Minister for a long time. He has announced his support to the coalition led by opposition leader Yair Lapid, but has also placed a condition. This news has created a stir in Israeli politics.

Arab parties formula

Arab parties, including Ra’am and Joint List, have issued a joint statement announcing their support to the opposition to remove Netanyahu. They believe that Netanyahu’s leadership is harmful for the country and they now want change. Their condition is that the incoming government should take into account the demands of the Arab community, which include equality, justice and resolution of the Palestinian issue. They also want the government to allocate budget for the development of the Arab community.

Challenge of opposition alliance

Despite the announcement of support from Arab parties, it is not so easy for the opposition coalition to remove Netanyahu. The opposition alliance includes parties with different ideologies, among which there are differences on many issues. Moreover, Netanyahu still has the support of his own party Likud and some other parties. To remove him, the opposition needs 61 seats to gain majority in Parliament, which they currently do not have.

Eigencott’s condition

There is another challenge before the opposition alliance – Gadi Eisenkot. Aizenkot is a former army chief and is also a contender for the post of Prime Minister. He has announced that he is ready to join with the opposition, but only if he gets a chance to lead the alliance. This has created tension within the opposition, as Lapid and other leaders are also staking claim to the post of Prime Minister.
