America: 21 year old student dies during treatment of broken ankle, serious questions raised on overdose of painkillers

A very sad and shocking case has come to light from the US state of Connecticut, where a 21-year-old college student, who had gone to the hospital for general treatment after breaking her ankle, died due to an overdose of painkillers. After this painful incident, serious questions have once again been raised on the functioning of the American health system and hospitals. The family of the deceased has approached the court accusing the hospital administration of gross negligence.

Broken ankle while working in the fields

According to the information received, 21-year-old Dale Alice Martin was studying English and History at the prestigious Trinity University of Texas. Last year, on April 10, 2025, she met with an accident while working in the fields, due to which her ankle was broken. After immediate first aid, he was admitted to Waterbury Hospital for further treatment. The family had no idea that the treatment of a simple bone fracture would prove fatal for their daughter.

Cocktail of painkillers was given within just 14 hours

According to the legal petition filed in court, within hours of being admitted to the hospital, Dale Martin’s health began to deteriorate rapidly and he eventually died due to complete respiratory arrest. The petition alleges that the medical staff of the hospital gave the student a dangerous cocktail of painkillers in such high quantities within a period of just 14 hours that her lungs stopped functioning. Due to the excessive and fatal effects of the medicines, she went into such a deep state of unconsciousness that even in the state of suffocation, she could not call anyone for help.

Negligence in monitoring and disclosure of post mortem report

The family also alleges that during this entire sensitive period, no staff member of the hospital did regular and proper monitoring of the patient. By the time a nurse saw him at around 7 a.m. the next morning, it was too late and his heartbeat had completely stopped. The autopsy (postmortem) report that came out after this confirmed that the simultaneous administration of several types of strong painkillers led to cardiac arrest, due to which he lost his life.

Legal screws and sharp reaction on hospital management

This unfortunate news has left the deceased’s father Lindsay Martin and the entire family in deep shock. The family, through their lawyer Christopher Mattei, has initiated legal action to hold the hospital administration accountable. According to legal documents, Waterbury Hospital previously operated under the California company ‘Prospect Medical Holdings’, which declared itself bankrupt in January 2025. After this, this hospital, which was facing financial crisis, was acquired by ‘Hartford Healthcare’. However, a representative of the new management has refused to comment on this old incident, saying that the matter predates their takeover.
