News India Live, Digital Desk: Airport in Bihar: The decades-old dream of the people of Seemanchal and North-Eastern Bihar is now going to turn into reality. After a long wait of nearly 92 years, passenger aircraft are ready to fly from Purnia’s land once again. This newly constructed airport is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon, after which the area will be directly connected to the big metros of the country via air.
What is the glorious aerial history of Purnia?
It is surprising to know that when people in the country used to travel by bullock cart, Purnia had joined air flights.
- Historical days of 1933: On April 3, 1933, two aircraft flew from Purnia land. It was aimed at taking the first pictures of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak.
- First commercial flight of 1956: After this, in the year 1956, the first commercial flight started from Purnia to Kolkata, but it could last a short time.
- Air Force Station built in 1963: The Air Force Station was established here after the Indo-China War in 1962. Even after this, flights started for short term in 1976–78 and 2012-13, but could not run permanently.
Now the flight of development will be filled by Seemanchal
This airport, which was prepared under the central government’s ‘Udaan’ (Udan – Flying Citizen’s Common Citizen) Scheme, will now be the fourth civilian airport in Bihar.
- Connectivity will change: Till now the people of Purnia and surrounding districts like Araria, Katihar and Kishanganj had to travel for hours to go to Patna or Bagdogra. The start of this airport will save both time and money.
- Direct flight from Delhi-Kolkata: In the initial phase, IndiGo Airlines will start direct flights from here to big cities like Delhi and Kolkata. There are plans to connect other cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru in the coming time.
- Terminal equipped with modern features: The new terminal building constructed at a cost of about Rs 34 crore has the ability to handle 300 passengers simultaneously, it has modern facilities like check-in counter, baggage scanner and local Manjusha art adorned walls.
- The economy will get speed: The opening of this airport will not only make the journey easier, but will also promote trade, tourism and health services in the Seemanchal region. It will be easy for local businesses to reach national markets and new investment opportunities will be created in the area.
The introduction of Purnia Airport after long wait and many obstacles is the beginning of a new era for the region, which promises to take the expectations and dreams of the people here to new heights.
