New Delhi : The Directorate of Civil Aviation on Thursday imposed a fine of Rs 30 lakh on Air India. The aviation regulator has taken this action in the case of the death of an elderly person due to non-availability of a wheelchair at Mumbai International Airport. On February 12, an 80-year-old passenger had to walk from the plane to the terminal after a wheelchair was not available at the airport. During this time he collapsed and died due to a heart attack.
A senior DGCA official said the fine has been imposed for failing to provide a wheelchair to an elderly passenger. Air India did not inform about any action taken by the airline against the erring employees. The airline company also failed to provide information about any corrective action taken to prevent such incidents in future.
The official said an advisory has been issued to all airlines to ensure that adequate number of wheelchairs are available for passengers who require assistance while boarding or deboarding during travel. It is the sole responsibility of the airline to provide a wheelchair to any passenger as per the guidelines.
