Anshuman Gaekwad passed away: Former Indian cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad died on Wednesday after a long illness with cancer. He breathed his last at the age of 71. Gaekwad played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India. He was also the coach of the Indian team that finished runner-up in the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy. Gaekwad was undergoing treatment for blood cancer at King's College Hospital in London before returning to the country last month.
The body of Anshuman Gaikwad is currently kept at his residence in Mahapura. The last rites will be performed at 12 noon. Many former cricketers, officials of Baroda Cricket Association will join the last rites. The cremation will be done at Kirti Mandir. The members of the royal family are cremated at Kirti Mandir. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief by posting on X.
BCCI helped for treatment
The BCCI had announced a financial aid of Rs 1 crore for Gaikwad's treatment. Members of the 1983 World Cup-winning team also helped the cricketer. Gaikwad also played 205 first-class matches in a career spanning 22 years. He later took over as the coach of the Indian team. His greatest moments came in the Test matches at Sharjah and Ferozeshah Kotla in 1998, while Anil Kumble took all 10 wickets in an innings against Pakistan in 1999.
