Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth today inaugurated a new airstrip and St. James Jetty along with six community development projects at Agalega Island in Mauritius. Both the leaders inaugurated these projects through video conferencing. A PMO press release said the inauguration of these projects is a testament to the strong and decades-long development partnership between India and Mauritius. These projects will strengthen Agalega's connectivity with mainland Mauritius and strengthen maritime security.
“The inauguration of these projects is a testament to the strong and decades-long development partnership between India and Mauritius,” the Prime Minister's Office said. “The projects will meet the demand for improved connectivity between mainland Mauritius and Agalega, strengthen maritime security and promote socio-economic development,” it said. According to a press release, the inauguration of these projects assumes significance as it follows the recent launch of the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) and Rupee card services in Mauritius by PM Modi and Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth on February 12.
Speaking at the launch, PM Modi said India's Unified Payment Interface (UPI) is imposing new obligations to unite partners with India. PM Modi said in the virtual ceremony, “Today is a special day for the three friendly countries of the Indian Ocean region. Today we are connecting our historical relations in a modern digital way.
