Beware of video call scam, government issued advisory

Nowadays video calling has become common. Video calls are more used than normal voice calls. In which you can see the other person directly but do you know that video call can empty your bank account. Also, people have been advised to be aware in this matter. However, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, or CERT-IN, of the Government of India has issued an advisory, according to which video calls are becoming a cause of fraud.

What is a true case of video call fraud?

Video call fraud has become common these days. In this type of fraud, people are called on platforms like WhatsApp. There are four types of calls.

1. Blackmailing

In this type of fraud, scammers record your video call without your knowledge and then threaten to leak the video.

2. investment

Scammers invest in fraudulent investment schemes through video calls claiming high returns.

3. Technical Support

Scammers pose as bank representatives in the name of technical support. You then download malware and access a device you control.

4. Honey Trap

Scammers steal your personal information or make a private video of you by talking romantically through video calls. After which he demands money from you.

deepfake

In this video call, fraud is done with the help of deepfake, in which a deepfake video can be made and a call can be made to your family member or acquaintance.

emergency

By making a video call, it is said that there is an emergency and by saying that the money will be sent quickly and on the pretext of transferring the money, it is asked to transfer the money.

don't do this even by mistake

  • Don't connect with strangers on social media. Before getting involved with someone, know them well.
  • Don't answer video calls from strangers who claim to know you.
  • Avoid giving video call access or contact access to any app.
  • Use a trusted app for video calls.
  • Do not share personal or financial information with anyone.
  • Set privacy of social media profiles.
