A two-storey school building collapsed in north-central Nigeria yesterday. 22 students were killed and 132 students were injured in this accident. Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency gave this information. A total of 154 students were buried under the debris of the collapsed school, although 132 of them were rescued. However, 22 students died during treatment in different hospitals.

A school building collapsed soon after the arrival of Saints Academy College students in Busa Buzi community of Plateau State, Nigeria. Many of the students were 15 years of age or younger. However, after the accident, relief and rescue operations were started in full swing at the site.

Ordered better treatment for the injured

Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency said rescue and health workers as well as security forces were immediately deployed to the scene due to the tragedy. According to an official at the state information office, the government had instructed hospitals to prioritise treatment without any documentation or payment of money to ensure immediate medical treatment.

The villagers helped

The state government blamed the school's poor design and its location on the riverbank for the tragedy. In this regard, the system insisted on closing down such schools. During the operation, a dozen rural schools had gathered near the rescue team and some people were crying while others were pleading for help. A woman tried to go near the debris crying but another person stopped her.

Building collapses are a common occurrence in Nigeria

Building collapses have become common in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, with more than a dozen such incidents reported in the past two years. Officials often fail to enforce building safety regulations and blame poor maintenance for such accidents.
