Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has suffered a major setback. His Conservative Party is facing a huge defeat in the general election. As soon as the counting began, the Labour Party led by Keir Starmer started winning. The exit poll results were also in their favour. When Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's ruling Conservative Party was predicted to suffer a historic defeat.
If the exit poll results are correct, the Labor Party can return to power with a huge majority and Keir Starmer will become the new Prime Minister. Counting of votes started as soon as voting ended in Britain. Another survey agency, YouGov, has predicted Keir Starmer's Labor Party to win 431 seats and PM Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party to win only 102 seats. If the survey is accurate, the Labor Party will get a huge majority in the 650-seat House of Commons. The exit poll predicts the Conservative Party's worst possible defeat since 1906. However, they still won 156 seats. The Liberal Democrats Party is projected to get 72 seats and the Reform UK Party 3 seats.
Latest Position….
With a figure of 186, the Labour Party is far ahead of the magic figure of 170 for a majority. The current ruling Conservative Party has not even secured 50 seats yet. However, these election results are not surprising. Because after the general election held in Britain on Thursday, the exit polls of BBC, ITV and Sky have predicted a big victory for the Labour Party.
On the other hand, Dehanna Davison says it would be unusual for a government to win a general election after being in power for 14 years. Davison was elected as County Durham's first Tory MP in 2019. This time he did not contest the election. The former MP says her party's biggest mistake was to 'get used to being in power'. She says some Conservative members need to look at themselves in the mirror and accept a level of responsibility.
Importance for India
India and Britain have been negotiating a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) for more than two years to boost trade between the two countries. The massive victory of the Labour Party can change the dynamics of the ongoing story on the FTA between the two countries. If the survey turns out to be correct, then like other European countries, the current government will change in Britain too. It is worth noting here that after the crisis created by the Covid pandemic and Russia's attack on Ukraine, elections held in many European countries have seen a change in power. Exit polls are indicating this change in Britain as well.
What is the UK?
The United Kingdom is made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and general elections apply to all these countries. There are a total of 650 constituencies in the UK. Of which 533 seats are in England, 59 seats in Scotland, 40 seats in Wales and 18 seats in Northern Ireland. However, it is important to know that each country within the UK also has its own government and elections are held there.
For example, Scotland has a Scottish Parliament (Holyrood) for which local elections are held. Wales has a Senate (parliament) and it is elected. Northern Ireland has a local assembly (Stormont) and it is elected. General elections are held to elect members of the United Kingdom who sit in Westminster. Where all four countries participate. The UK government, also known as the central government or Westminster, also has decision-making powers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This matter is related to foreign policy, security and economy. The local governments of all four countries manage their internal affairs on their own.
