Chaturmas 2024: Chaturmas means that no auspicious work is done during the four months in which the Lord sleeps. Although auspicious works are not done in Chaturmas, these four months are considered best for chanting, penance, worship and recitation.

When will Chaturmas start in 2024?

This year Chaturmas is starting from 17th July 2024, on this day Devshayani Ekadashi will be celebrated. D.T. Chaturmas will end on 12th November 2024 on Devuthi Ekadashi. Chaturmas starts from the last day of the Ashad month of the Hindu calendar. That is, Shramana, Bhadravo, Aso and Kartika continue till the last days of the month.

Why are auspicious functions stopped during Chaturmas?

In Hinduism, it is believed that during the 4 months of Chaturmas, when the Sun is in Dakshinayan, Lord Vishnu remains in Yog Nidra. The brightness of the Sun decreases. Therefore, if you do any auspicious or mangal work during this time, you will not receive the blessings of God and you will not get the auspicious result of your work.

When does Chaturmas start and end?

As mentioned in the scriptures, at this time, Lord Ksheer Sagar is sleeping on the Anant bed. That is why no auspicious work is done in these four months. After that, in the month of Kartik, on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha i.e. Devuthi Agiyaras, Lord wakes up from Yognidra.

Chaturmas starts with the rainy season. That is, during this time harmful bacteria are produced in water and our digestive power also slows down. Due to which one should not be careless about food during these four months, this not only causes guilt but also harms health.

  • Raw green leafy vegetables should not be eaten during Chaturmas.
  • Also, consumption of milk, curd and buttermilk should be avoided.
  • Eating non-vegetarian and spicy food is completely prohibited.
  • If you consume a little honey every day during Chaturmas, it will be beneficial for your health.
