A shocking case has come to light from Belgium. A court acquitted a man of drunk driving charges. know why? Because that person did not drink alcohol, rather his body produced alcohol on its own. You will probably be shocked to know this but it is true. A 40-year-old man proved in court that he has a rare disease. He is a patient of 'Otto Bravery Syndrome' (ABS). This is a disease in which alcohol is produced inside the stomach. This alcohol gets mixed in the blood due to which the person becomes intoxicated. This news has created a stir in the Belgian media. The man's lawyer Anse Gachaquier said that so far the disease has been confirmed in only 20 people worldwide. Ghasquier did not reveal the identity of his client. He said that after tests the doctors provided evidence that his client was suffering from ABS.
Is alcohol produced in the body?
In April 2022, Belgian police stopped that man's car. Breathalyzer test revealed that he was under the influence of alcohol. 0.91 milligrams of alcohol per liter of breath was found. A month later, a breath test showed 0.71 milligrams of alcohol. The legal limit of alcohol in Belgium is 0.22 mg. Earlier this person was also caught in 2019. His license was later suspended with a fine. Even after this the man claimed that he does not drink alcohol. Perhaps even he did not know that he was a patient of such a rare disease. When the case against him started in 2022, this was revealed in the medical examination.
What is auto-brewery syndrome?
Auto-brewery syndrome or ABS is a very rare medical condition. This causes fermentation of carbohydrates in the victim's stomach, producing ethanol. This ethanol is absorbed in the small intestine. Intoxication occurs when the amount of alcohol in the blood increases.
Ghesquière said his client eats a low-carbohydrate diet to produce less alcohol in the stomach. A formal order for his release has not been issued yet. If the police wish, they can appeal against the decision within a month.
