The uncertainty and academic deadlock that has been going on for the last several days in Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University has finally ended. The university administration has issued an official order to completely open the campus and restart all classes in offline mode from November 2, ending the phase of online classes. This decision has been taken after the end of the ongoing student agitation and hunger strike regarding student union elections and reinstatement. With this decision of the administration, thousands of students of Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG) and research programs have heaved a sigh of relief, as now their studies and semester examinations will be conducted physically directly on the campus.
There was a dharna and hunger strike by student organizations for about 18 days demanding the reinstatement of the student union in the university campus. In view of maintaining security and peace, the administration had earlier shifted all the classes to virtual medium and had issued a notice to extend it further. However, after talks and a consensus was reached between the university administration and the agitating students, the students announced to end their hunger strike and dharna. After the situation became completely normal, the competent authority immediately issued a new office order and directed to open all the faculties and departments of the campus regularly.
According to the official notification issued, the following major rules will be effective in the educational system from November 2:
-
Offline Classes for All Courses: In all the departments, centers and faculties of the university, all the undergraduate and postgraduate subjects will be taught in physical classes only as per the prescribed time-table.
-
Examinations will be held in offline mode only: All mid-term, end-term and practical examinations of odd semesters will now be conducted under offline arrangement in the campus instead of online.
-
Regular Attendance Compulsory: The administration has clarified that it will be mandatory for students to maintain regular attendance in classes as per the rules of the university.
-
Libraries and other facilities reopen: With the opening of the campus, the Central Library (Dr. Zakir Husain Library), reading rooms and departmental labs have also been made fully functional for the students.
The university administration has directed all the Heads of Departments (HODs) and Deans to streamline the cleanliness of the classrooms, seating arrangements and preparations of the examination centers before November 2. Students are advised to confirm the new revised time-table and examination dates released on the notice board or official portal of their respective department.
