Red alert of torrential rain in 5 districts of Jharkhand, 11 trains running from Tatanagar cancelled.

Cyclonic storm ‘Arnab’ has now taken a severe form after hitting the eastern coastal areas of the country. Its direct and devastating impact is visible on the southern and eastern parts of Jharkhand. In view of the increasing impact of the cyclone, the Meteorological Center (IMD) has issued a red alert of extremely heavy rain and strong thunderstorm for 5 major districts of Jharkhand. Citing security reasons and water logging on railway tracks due to the storm, South Eastern Railways has announced complete cancellation of 11 major trains originating from and passing through Tatanagar (Jamshedpur) railway station. Apart from this, the routes and timings of many trains have been changed. The Meteorological Department and the local district administration have issued a strict appeal to the citizens not to leave their homes without any urgent work and to remain alert.

According to the latest bulletin issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Ranchi Centre, after the completion of the landfall process of cyclonic storm ‘Arnab’ which arose from the Bay of Bengal, it is moving rapidly towards the border of Jharkhand. Its maximum impact will be seen in East Singhbhum (Jamshedpur), West Singhbhum (Chaibasa), Seraikela-Kharsawan, Simdega and Khunti districts of the state. Meteorologists estimate that in these five districts, strong storm winds at a speed of 80 to 100 kilometers per hour may blow during the next 24 to 48 hours and there is every possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall. In view of the seriousness of the situation, the Disaster Management Department has instructed the administrative teams in these districts to remain on alert mode.

Due to the cyclonic storm, the Railway Administration has taken a major decision to strengthen the security arrangements in Chakradharpur and Tatanagar Railway Division. 11 important express and passenger trains running from Tatanagar railway station and running on Howrah-Mumbai main railway route have been cancelled. As soon as the news of cancellation of trains was received, a huge crowd of passengers gathered at Tatanagar station and an atmosphere of chaos was created. According to railway officials, mainly trains like Tatanagar-Howrah Express, Tatanagar-Bilaspur Express, Chakradharpur-Jharsuguda Passenger, Tatanagar-Barkakana Passenger and Ranchi-Howrah Intercity have been affected. For passenger convenience and refund process, additional help desks and special counters have been opened at the station to help stranded passengers.

Due to heavy rains caused by Cyclone ‘Arnab’, there is a possibility of unexpected rise in the water level of Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers flowing through Jamshedpur city and surrounding areas. The district administration has issued an announcement in the low-lying areas situated on the banks of rivers and advised people to shift to safe places and relief camps. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed in East Singhbhum and Seraikela with boats, cutters and life saving equipment to deal with any emergency. The electricity department has also been put on alert, as strong winds may cause blackout in many areas due to falling of trees and electric poles.

There is a possibility of huge loss to the agricultural sector due to this sudden and dangerous change in the weather. Krishi Vigyan Kendra and Disaster Management Department have issued special advisory for farmers. Farmers have been advised to immediately shift the paddy crop standing or harvested in the fields to a safe and permanent shed, so that the crop can be protected from getting washed away or rotting in heavy rain water. Along with this, an appeal has been made to the common citizens not to stand near any old dilapidated house, big trees, iron hoardings and electric wires during the storm. Avoid driving on waterlogged roads and keep the helpline numbers issued by the district administration safe with you.

Modern Generative Weather Forecasting (Generative Weather Analytics) and analysis of satellite images show that as Cyclone ‘Arnab’ passes over the landmass of Jharkhand, its intensity will gradually reduce and turn into a deep depression. However, its impact will also be seen on the districts of Central Jharkhand like Ranchi, Bokaro, Dhanbad and Gumla, where light to moderate rains will be accompanied by cold winds. The Meteorological Department believes that due to the impact of the storm, there will be a huge drop in temperature in the entire state and the effect of cold winds will increase. Railways, civil aviation and state government officials are keeping a close watch on the situation so that the damage to common life can be minimized.
