A large and high-profile network of smuggling of illegal coal i.e. ‘Black Diamond’ has been exposed in the coal-rich Latehar district of Jharkhand. Taking prompt action, a joint team of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and local police, based on secret information, has completely foiled a big and cunning conspiracy of coal smugglers. While seizing vehicles carrying illegal coal worth lakhs of rupees from the coal mining and transportation area of Latehar, the brave CISF soldiers laid siege and caught many vicious smugglers red handed. This strict action of CISF against this organized gang which takes advantage of the darkness of night to embezzle government revenue and steal natural resources has created a stir among the coal mafias and illegal businessmen of the entire area.
#1 CISF’s big action and clever siege on secret information in the mines area of Latehar
The entire matter is related to the major coal mining area of Latehar district, where for some time, secret inputs were being received about illegal excavation of coal and inter-state smuggling. CISF intelligence got accurate information that a big gang of smugglers was preparing to load a huge quantity of illegal coal in vehicles late at night and spend it in the border areas. Considering the seriousness of the information, a Special Task Team was formed under the direction of CISF Commandant. Without any noise, the soldiers strategically cordoned off all the major roads exiting the mine area, secret routes in the forests and check posts. As soon as the convoy of smugglers moved forward under the cover of darkness, the alert CISF team surrounded them from all sides.
#1 Smugglers trying to escape chased away and caught, huge quantity of illegal coal seized
Seeing this sudden surgical siege by the soldiers, the coal smugglers lost their senses and they left the vehicle and tried to run towards the nearby dense forests. However, the CISF jawans, alert in advance and fully prepared, chased them and caught many main smugglers and drivers on the spot. During the search operation, several tonnes of high quality coal was recovered loaded in seized trucks and tractors, the market value of which is being estimated at lakhs of rupees. The accused caught during preliminary interrogation have revealed the secrets of many big names and kingpins associated with this illegal syndicate spread in Latehar and surrounding districts, on the basis of which the police has started taking further action.
#1 Crackdown on coal mafia and syndicate, joint investigation of police and CISF started
After this success of CISF, the caught smugglers, seized vehicles and recovered ‘Black Diamond’ have been handed over to the local police station for further legal process. Police have registered an FIR under relevant serious sections of Mines and Minerals Act and IPC. Investigating officers say that this is not just a case of sporadic theft, but an organized coal mafia was working behind it which was involved in looting the natural resources of the state for a long time. The police are now scanning the mobile call details (CDR) and financial transactions of the smugglers so that the entire gang can be rooted out by gaining access to the funders and buyers of this illegal network.
#1 Security increased in Latehar and surrounding mining areas, strict instructions to intensify patrolling
After this major action, security arrangements have been made extremely tight in Latehar, Chatra and the entire surrounding coal belt. CISF and local police administration have made it clear that theft of national property and illegal mining will not be tolerated at any cost. 24-hour night patrolling and surprise checking has been started at sensitive mining sites, railway sidings and transportation routes. CISF officials say that similar sudden and strict action against coal smugglers and mafias will continue in future also so that the loss to the state revenue can be completely prevented.
