Today, on 29th October, Karva Chauth, the great festival of married women, is being celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm across the country. On festival days, this question often arises in the minds of people whether bank branches will remain closed on the occasion of Karva Chauth or business will continue as usual. As per the official bank holiday calendar released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Karva Chauth is not a national or all India bank holiday.. This means that banks in most of the states and major cities of the country are completely open like normal working days and regular work is being done at the counter.
RBI prescribes regional holidays under the ‘Negotiable Instruments Act’ depending on the states and local cultural festivals.
-
Himachal Pradesh (Shimla): Today, on October 29, on the occasion of Karva Chauth, only the branches of all government and private banks located in Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh and the respective territorial jurisdiction will remain closed. There the holiday has been notified for bank employees under the annual leave rules of the state government.
-
Rest of the country is open: Except Shimla, there is no holiday in bank branches on Karva Chauth in any other state or union territory of the country.
In the states of North India where the festival of Karva Chauth is celebrated on the largest scale, regular banking services are operational in bank branches:
-
Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR): All government (like SBI, PNB) and private banks (HDFC, ICICI, Axis) are open as per normal timetable in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad.
-
Uttar Pradesh: Banks are open in all 75 districts of UP including Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Meerut, Gorakhpur and Agra and the work of check clearance, cash deposit and withdrawal is going on.
-
Punjab and Haryana: There is no public holiday for banks on Karva Chauth in Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Rohtak and Ambala also.
-
Bihar and Jharkhand: All bank branches in Patna, Gaya, Ranchi and Jamshedpur are open for customers as usual.
-
Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh: Banks are also functioning normally in Mumbai, Jaipur, Bhopal and Indore.
