Karva Chauth fast story: This inspirational mythological story is related to Queen Veeravati.
According to the legend, once upon a time a famous moneylender had seven sons and an only daughter, whose name was Veeravati Was. Being the beloved and only sister of seven brothers, Veeravati was the apple of her family’s eyes and was married into a well-to-do family. On the Chaturthi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month, along with the moneylender’s wife, his seven daughters-in-law and daughter Veeravati also observed a waterless fast of Karva Chauth.
Veeravati’s body began to ache due to the rigorous fasting she endured throughout the day and by evening her condition became very weak. The brothers could not bear to see this condition of their beloved sister. At night, when all the moneylender’s brothers sat down to eat, he requested his sister to eat as well. But Veeravati refused saying that she would take water and food only after seeing the moon.
The artificial moon shown by the brothers and the disaster associated with it
The moneylender’s son could not see his sister suffering from hunger and thirst. He hatched a unique and fatally mistaken plan to break his sister’s fast. The brothers went a little distance from the house and lit a fire under the cover of a tree and by placing a fine cloth or sieve over it, it produced such light that it looked like the moon when seen from a distance.
After this, the brothers came home and told their sister Veeravati that look, the moon has come out in the sky, now you can break your fast by offering Arghya. Veeravati also tried to show the moon to her sisters-in-law, but the wise sisters-in-law warned her that it was not yet the time of the moon and it could be some trick or illusion of their brothers. But due to her immense love for her brothers and the anxiety of fasting, Veeravati ignored her sisters-in-law and considering that artificial light to be the moon, offered water to her and sat down to eat.
Result of ignoring the rules of fasting: Husband faces trouble
As soon as Veeravati put the first morsel of food in her mouth after breaking her fast, inauspicious events started happening to her. In the very first mouthful of food she found hair, in the second she sneezed loudly, and in the very third moment a sad message came from her in-laws that her husband’s health had suddenly deteriorated.
Distraught, Veeravati immediately reached her in-laws’ house, but as soon as she reached there, she saw that her husband had died. Seeing this terrible thunderbolt, Veeravati started crying bitterly and considered herself guilty for this disaster. She sat and mourned near her husband’s dead body the whole night.
Goddess Indrani’s grace and Veeravati’s repentance
Seeing Veeravati’s lamentation and her true devotion, he Devi Indrani Appeared there. Veeravati cryingly asked the goddess to forgive her mistake and prayed to revive her husband.
Goddess Indrani made Veeravati realize her mistake and said that you broke your fast midway without seeing the moon and ignoring the rules, that is why this fate has come upon your husband. After this, the Goddess instructed her that if she observes the fast of Karva Chauth next year with full devotion, devotion and rituals, then her husband will definitely get the blessing of life.
By the grace of Lord Ganesha, I got unbroken good fortune and life of my husband.
Following the words of Goddess Indrani, Veeravati returned to her maternal home and in-laws house and started observing the fast of Sankashti Chaturthi regularly every month. He worshiped Lord Ganesha and Karva Mata with full devotion throughout the year.
Seeing his selfless devotion and repentance, Karva Mata and Lord Ganesha were pleased. When again next year the holy day of Chauth of Kartik Krishna Paksha came, Veeravati this time observed the fast with complete purity and rules. Due to the effect of the fast and the blessings of Karva Mata, her dead husband was revived. Happiness once again returned to Veeravati’s house and she started living a happy life with her husband.
