New Delhi/Auto Desk. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) India has given the biggest and most surprising gift ever to the lovers of luxury off-road SUVs in the Indian automobile market. The company has directly reduced the prices of Land Rover Defender 110 by up to ₹ 34 lakh, which has become the first choice of India’s celebrities, politicians and industrialists. The biggest reason behind this historic decision is the formal start of local assembly of this iconic SUV in India. Till now, the Defender, which was imported into India through the CBU (Completely Built-Up) route from abroad, is now being assembled at JLR’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Pune, Maharashtra. Due to being assembled domestically, there has been a huge reduction in the heavy custom and import duty imposed on it, the direct and full benefit of which has been passed on by the company to the pockets of Indian customers. After this decision, the starting ex-showroom price of Defender 110 in India has come down below the magical figure of ₹ 1 crore for the first time i.e. to just ₹ 99 lakh. This stir in the auto sector right in the middle of the festive season has shocked the rival luxury vehicle manufacturing companies like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and Jeep.
Jaguar Land Rover has clarified that the X-Dynamic HSE trim of the ‘Defender 110’, currently the most popular and best-selling body-style in India, is being manufactured at its Pune plant through a complete knock-down (CKD) kit. Its parts are being brought to India from the company’s global production plant Nitra in Slovakia and are being assembled in Pune under the supervision of Indian engineers. The start of this local production has resulted in a historic decline in the prices of both petrol and diesel engine options of the Defender 110. If we talk about the most affordable 2.0-litre turbo-petrol The biggest changes have taken place in the most popular 3.0-litre 6-cylinder turbo-petrol X-Dynamic HSE and 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder diesel X-Dynamic HSE variants. The old price of both these powerful 3.0-litre models was earlier ₹ 1.52 crore, which the company has reduced by ₹ 34 lakh and now it has fixed it at ₹ 1.18 crore (ex-showroom). If seen on percentage basis, Indian customers are getting direct savings of 22.37 percent in 3.0-litre models and about 12.39 percent in 2.0-litre models. However, for enthusiasts, the Defender 90 (3-door version), Defender 130 (long wheelbase 8-seater version) and the recently launched ultra-performance Defender Octa V8 will continue to be sold as fully imported CBU units.
It is generally seen that when the prices of a luxury car fall, companies cut down its features to reduce the cost, but Land Rover has taken a completely opposite and surprising step for Indian buyers. The company has not only reduced the prices, but has also now included 17 to 29 premium optional features that were previously available at a huge expense of lakhs of rupees, as standard equipment at no extra charge. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol model of the Defender 110 will now come with features worth ₹ 6.5 lakh in-built from the base model itself. These include electronic air suspension with adaptive dynamics, adaptive off-road cruise control that automatically controls speed on difficult terrain, air purifier that protects the cabin from pollution, 3-zone automatic climate control and auto-dimming ClearSight interior rear-view mirror. Apart from this, headlight washer, body colored spare wheel cover, spare wheel lock, refrigerator compartment in the front center console and 14-way electrically adjustable front seats equipped with heating, cooling and memory functions will now be available as standard. While the 3.0-litre petrol and diesel variants have become cheaper by ₹ 34 lakh, the company has made optional features worth about ₹ 17 lakh as standard for free. These top-spec models now come with features like larger 20-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, illuminated metal treadplates, active electronic differential with torque vectoring technology, reclining and sliding second row seats, heated third row seats, ultra-premium suede headliner, 700-watt 15-speaker Meridian surround sound system and a head-up display (HUD) that makes driving easier. Land Rover Defender is known for its robust monocoque chassis (D7x architecture) and its ability to conquer the world’s most dangerous terrains with ease. Customers will get three main powertrain options in the Defender 110 being assembled in Pune. The first engine is a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged Ingenium petrol, which generates 300 PS of maximum power and 400 Nm of peak torque. This engine is best suited for those buyers who want to own a Defender in a budget of less than ₹ 1 crore with balanced driving in the city and on the highway. The second engine is a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder turbo-petrol equipped with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. This engine produces a massive 400 PS of power and a massive 550 Nm of torque, which helps the bulky SUV accelerate in the blink of an eye. The third and most favorite of Indian buyers is the 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. Equipped with a mild hybrid system, this diesel powertrain delivers 350 PS of power and a massive torque of 700 Nm. All three engines come mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and Land Rover’s signature all-wheel drive (AWD) system. The Terrain Response 2 system in it automatically adapts the vehicle’s suspension and traction to the ground on mud, sand, snow and rocky terrain. Along with this, the vehicle has the capability to wade into deep water up to 900 mm (wading depth) and ground clearance of 291 mm, which makes it the uncrowned king of any terrain in the real sense.
In the Indian market, Defender has become not just a vehicle but a huge status symbol. According to data for the financial year 2025-26, Land Rover Defender has been JLR’s best-selling car in India. The Defender, flagship Range Rover and Range Rover Sport alone account for more than 80 percent of the company’s total sales in India. There are more than 9,000 Defender units running on the roads in India so far. Defender has become the first choice in the fleet of Bollywood stars like Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Kapoor, Sunny Deol to top industrialists and prominent politicians across the country. Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover is developing India as a major manufacturing and assembly hub as part of its ‘Reimagine’ strategy. The company is already assembling premium vehicles like Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, Evoque and Discovery Sport at the Pune plant. Now the inclusion of Defender 110 in this list strengthens the Make-in-India vision. Industry experts believe that with the introduction of CKD assembly, not only have prices come down by Rs 34 lakh, but the long waiting period, which used to last 6 to 9 months till now, will also reduce to a few weeks, as the pace of production at the plant will be much faster due to local supply. JLR expects that after this historic price revision, there will be an additional growth of at least 20 to 25 percent in the annual sales of Defender in India.
The company has started taking bookings for the new Made-in-India Defender 110 across the country’s authorized dealership network and official online portal with immediate effect. Customers can book their favorite engine and color variants by just paying a token amount. According to the company’s official statement, the delivery of the first batch of locally assembled Defender 110 to the customers will start from November 15. After this huge price cut of ₹ 34 lakh, the competition in the Indian luxury SUV market has become very tough and exciting. Coming into this aggressive price bracket of ₹99 lakh to ₹1.18 crore, the Defender will now directly take on the traditional luxury family car market like the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, Porsche Macan and the Volvo XC90. Customers who earlier turned to these German cars in the budget of Rs 1 to 1.25 crore, now have a direct option to buy a boxy, muscular, extremely strong and status symbol legendary SUV like the Defender at the same price. If you were also looking for an SUV that would attract everyone’s attention on the road and go from forest to desert without stopping, then the new Defender 110, which has become cheaper by Rs 34 lakh, can prove to be the biggest and attractive deal for you at this time.
