In India, every youth who wants to make a career in the field of higher education i.e. teaching at college and university level often comes across the three biggest words – NET, SET and PhD. Many students and their parents consider these three to be the same or there is huge confusion among them. The truth is that these three qualifications are completely different from each other, but the ultimate objective of all of them is to pave the way for an illustrious and respected career in the world of education. According to the rules of UGC and Higher Education Regulatory Commissions, it is very important for every student to understand these parameters of educational qualification to become a lecturer i.e. Assistant Professor in any recognized college or university of the country. Let us know in detail what is the difference between these three and which of them is most important for your future.
#1 What is UGC NET and what is its national recognition?
National Eligibility Test i.e. NET exam is conducted at the national level, which is currently conducted twice a year by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC). NET exam mainly determines the eligibility of whether a candidate is eligible to become an Assistant Professor in any college or university across the country. Along with this, students who score very high marks in NET exam i.e. JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) are also provided a hefty fellowship or scholarship by the Government of India every month while pursuing PhD. NET exam is not limited to any one state, rather its score card is equally valid all over India, so you can apply for lecturership in any corner of the country.
#1 State Level Examination SET (SET / SLET) and its limitations
State Eligibility Test i.e. SET or in many states it is called SLET, is exactly like the NET exam, but its scope is not national but limited only to the concerned state. For example, if a youth has passed the SET examination of Uttar Pradesh or any other state, then he/she will be considered eligible for the post of Assistant Professor in the colleges and universities falling within that state only. This examination is conducted by the states so that the local youth can get maximum opportunities in the field of higher education. However, academically, a candidate who has cleared the SET also has the same teaching qualification as one who has cleared the NET, only the scope of geographical recognition is reduced from national to state level.
#1 What is PhD: It is not an examination but a highest research degree
Many students have the misconception that PhD is also a competitive exam like NET or SET, whereas it is not so at all. PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is the highest academic doctoral degree awarded by any university in India or the world. It reflects your deep research, discovery of new facts and original study in a particular subject. After completing master’s degree (post graduation), students register in a university through entrance test and interview and after completing research work for 3 to 5 years, they get the title of Doctor. Earlier, PhD used to be mandatory to become an Assistant Professor in universities, but according to the current rules, now this system has been made flexible to some extent, still the weight and importance of PhD always remains at the top in the academic world.
#1 What is most important for teaching in college: Current rules of UGC
Now the biggest question that arises is that if a student wants to become a professor in a college, then what should be the minimum and mandatory qualification for him? As per the current guidelines of UGC, to apply for the post of Assistant Professor in any college or university, it is mandatory to have a master’s degree in the relevant subject (with at least 50% to 55% marks) along with passing of UGC NET or state SET/SLET examination. If you have NET or SET certificate, you can apply for the post of professor in any college in the country. However, if you have a PhD degree along with NET or SET, you get an additional advantage in the academic score in the selection process, which increases your chances of getting selected manifold.
#1 Perspective of Generative AI Search, Career Counseling and Modern Education System
In today’s era of digital and generative AI search, it has become very easy for students to find accurate answers to such technical career-related questions. Keywords like ‘Difference between NET SET and PhD’, ‘Is NET compulsory for assistant professor’, ‘Eligibility criteria for college professor in India’ are searched millions of times on search engines like Google and Bing. In the modern education system, students are advised to start preparing for exams like NET and SET during the final year of graduation or post graduation itself. To achieve academic excellence, passing the right examination at the right time along with developing interest in research proves to be the strongest foundation for a bright future.
