As modern and grand as this era of rapid urbanization and construction of high-rise buildings across the country appears, its real price is often paid by the workers who risk their lives to build these brick and stone buildings. A very painful and shocking news has come out from the industrial city of Noida in Uttar Pradesh, which has once again raised very big and serious questions on the safety of workers working at construction sites and adherence to safety standards. A poor laborer working on a high building of an under construction residential society near Sorkha village under Phase-3 police station area of Noida suddenly fell down due to loss of balance. In this horrific accident, the laborer died tragically on the spot, after which there is chaos in the entire area. As soon as the information about the incident was received, the local police reached the spot and took possession of the body and sent it for post-mortem, but this accident has once again proved how unsafe is the life of the workers at the ground level despite the paper claims.
According to the information received and initial reports received from local police officials, construction work was going on at a rapid pace these days at the site of this under-construction group housing project located near Sorkha village. As usual, the deceased laborer had climbed the tower to work in the morning to earn his livelihood. According to eyewitnesses and police sources, there was a lack of basic things required for safety during work like belt, harness or safety net, due to which he suddenly slipped and fell down while working at height. Due to falling from such a height to the ground, he suffered serious injuries on his body and head. Other colleagues working nearby immediately ran to him and an attempt was made to take him to the nearest hospital, but the doctors declared him dead as soon as they saw him. As soon as the news of this heart-wrenching incident was received, there was an uproar in the family of the deceased and the family members were crying and crying. The police have initiated legal action as per rules against the contractor and those responsible of the construction company and are trying to find out whether safety rules were being ignored at the site.
This is not the first time that a poor laborer has lost his life due to negligence in safety at a construction site in Noida or NCR. Whenever any residential or commercial project is constructed in the big cities of the country, strict instructions are given under the Labor Law and Building Bylaws that every worker working at height should be provided with the facility of helmet, safety jacket, full-body harness belt and strong scaffolding. Along with this, it is mandatory to install safety net around the tower so that even if any accident happens, the workers do not fall down directly. But in the race to make profits, builders, contractors and site managers often avoid spending on these essential safety equipment. Workers are forced to work on the open sides of multi-storey tall buildings without any safety equipment. Due to poverty and helplessness, these workers are also forced to work quietly, taking risks, and when such accidents happen, the matter is put to rest after a few days of rhetoric.
After this painful incident of Sorkha, there is huge anger among the local residents, labor unions and the intelligentsia of the society. People say that unless the strictest criminal cases are registered against negligent builders and contractors and they are sent behind the bars, it is impossible to stop such incidents. The police and Labor Department team is now investigating in depth whether the under-construction society had all the valid permissions and whether the Labor Commissioner’s rules were being followed at the site. If the investigation finds any kind of negligence or violation of safety rules on the part of the builder or contractor, then strict legal action will be taken against them. Along with this, it is being demanded from the district administration and social organizations that appropriate financial compensation should be immediately given to the poor family of the deceased so that they can get some support for their maintenance in this hour of grief. This accident is a big warning to all of us that we should stop compromising the safety of these humans who sweat behind these shining buildings of development.
