Vijayadashami, the sacred festival of the eternal victory of righteousness over unrighteousness and truth over untruth, is being celebrated with immense enthusiasm and devotion throughout the country. On this auspicious occasion, the country’s President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have greeted all the countrymen. At the same time, in Gorakhpur, which is called the religious capital of Uttar Pradesh, a huge crowd has gathered for the traditional and grand victory procession under the leadership of Gorakshpeethadhishwar and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Amidst tight security arrangements, a unique flavor of Vijay Parv is being seen from Gorakhpur to Lucknow and Delhi.
President Draupadi Murmu said in his message that the festival of Vijayadashami gives us constant inspiration to follow the path of dignity, truth, courage and justice. He appealed to the countrymen to resolve to build a strong, harmonious and self-reliant India by eliminating the evils, negative thoughts and social evils hidden within us. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the countrymen on Vijayadashami through social media platforms and his message, saying that this auspicious occasion awakens in the society the feeling of standing against injustice and working unitedly for nation building.
In the message issued from Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President especially emphasized on the respect of women, welfare of the deprived sections of the society and integrity. He said that just as Lord Shri Ram established truth by killing Ravana and Mother Durga killed Mahishasura, in the same way every citizen of the society should contribute for social harmony and progress.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address said that Vijayadashami is a living symbol of the eternal victory of good over evil. Today India is writing a new chapter of self-reliance and victory in every field. In such a situation, this festival provides an opportunity to every citizen to defeat negativity and take a new resolution to move forward rapidly on the path of development of the nation. Union Home Minister, Defense Minister and Chief Ministers and Governors of various states also heartily congratulated the people of the country on this occasion.
The celebration of Vijayadashami at Gorakshpeeth in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh is famous across the country for its supernatural tradition. According to the specific tradition of Nathpanth, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the form of Gorakshpeethadhishwar performed special rituals in the temple premises in the morning. This included worship of Guru Gorakhnath ji, cow service and special weapon worship. In the Nath tradition, coordination of both weapons and scriptures is considered essential for the protection of religion and nation.
The grand victory procession will start from Gorakshpeeth in the afternoon. In this traditional procession, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will be dressed in traditional attire and riding on a special chariot as a representative of Guru Gorakhnath. Sadhus and saints of Nath sect, Batuks, folk artists and thousands of devotees are participating in the procession to the tune of bhajan-kirtan and traditional musical instruments. This procession will leave from Gorakshanath temple and reach Mansarovar Ramlila Maidan through the main roads of the city.
The main attraction of this historical procession of Gorakhpur is the coronation of Maryada Purushottam Lord Shri Ram to be held at Mansarovar Ramlila Maidan. Here Gorakshpeethadhishwar Yogi Adityanath will perform the aarti of Lord Shri Ram, Lakshman, Mata Sita and devotee Hanuman with proper worship and tilak. After this, giant effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad will be burnt in the field.
A very unique example of the tradition of Gorakhpur is that a wonderful scene of social harmony can be seen in this yatra. When this procession passes through Muslim dominated areas and weavers’ settlements, people from the local minority community also give a grand welcome to Gorakshpeethadhishwar and shower flowers. This scene further strengthens the foundation of mutual brotherhood and harmony that has existed for centuries.
According to astrological calculations, the day of Vijayadashami itself is considered an inexplicable auspicious time. Starting any new work, starting a new business, house warming or purchasing a vehicle on this day is considered extremely fruitful and auspicious. According to religious beliefs, on this holy date, Mother Goddess Durga freed the gods from fear by killing Mahishasura and Lord Shri Ram hoisted the flag of religion by killing Lankapati Ravana.
On this day, along with weapon worship (Ayudha Puja), there is also a special tradition of worshiping the Shami tree. There is a mythological belief that during the Mahabharata period, the Pandavas had hidden their divine weapons in the Shami tree during their exile and by worshiping it again on the day of Vijayadashami, they won over the Kauravas. This is the reason why on this day security forces, police forces, Kshatriya community and followers of Sanatan tradition worship their weapons and equipment and wish for victory.
In today’s times, Vijayadashami is not just a remembrance of a mythological story, but a day for every person to look within himself. The real significance of this festival is to burn the internal demons like corruption, hatred, discrimination, jealousy and inaction prevalent in the society. In this era of technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI), protecting moral values and remaining firm on the truth is the biggest victory.
Security arrangements have been tightened across the country. Ramlila grounds and immersion sites in all major states including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh are being monitored with drone cameras and CCTV. Cultural festivals and Ramlila stagings being organized at various places are easily conveying the immortal story of Indian culture to the new generation. This great festival of Vijayadashami gives the eternal message to all of us to walk without wavering on the path of religion, truth, duty and humanity.
