In Indian democracy, the impartiality, transparency and functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI) is considered to be the strongest pillar of the country’s electoral structure. But in recent times, various claims have started being made on social media and some political forums to make the functioning of the Election Commission doubtful. In this series, a very sensational claim regarding the electoral system of Uttar Pradesh went viral rapidly, in which it was said that the Election Commission has automatically deleted about 85 thousand forms in Uttar Pradesh. After this viral claim gained momentum and created confusion among the opposition and the public, the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh (CEO UP) has taken strict cognizance of it. Top officials of the Election Commission have completely rejected all these claims and termed them as completely fake, misleading and fabricated, giving a befitting reply to the people raising questions on the electoral process.
For the last few days, the news was spreading like wildfire on various social media platforms that more than 85,000 application forms filled by citizens during the revision of voter list or special drives in Uttar Pradesh have been auto deleted by the system without any proper reason or prior notice. As soon as such news came to light, opposition parties and various organizations started raising serious questions on the transparency of the Election Commission. It was alleged that this is a direct attack on the democratic rights of the citizens and the right to get their names added to the voting list. Such claims started raising doubts in the minds of common voters as to whether their applications had really gone missing, due to which the political temperature suddenly rose and the State Election Office had to give an immediate clarification on this.
Considering the seriousness of the matter, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Uttar Pradesh issued an official denial and clarified the entire situation. Election officials clearly said that this entire story of auto deletion of 85 thousand forms is completely false and baseless. The Voter Service Portal and Electoral Data Management System used by the Election Commission is completely secure, transparent and technologically advanced. Any valid applicant’s form cannot be removed or automatically deleted by the system without proper legal process, verification or technical standards. The Commission clarified that the applications of those who have filled their forms with correct documents are completely safe and they are being processed as per the rules.
In today’s digital age, it has become a common trend to spread sensational news on social media without any factual checking. Taking this incident very seriously, the Election Commission has warned that such fabricated allegations are being made to tarnish the image of democratic institutions and create unnecessary distrust among voters. The Election Commission has also appealed to the citizens and the media not to immediately believe any kind of misleading or unverified information. Any kind of official data and updates related to elections should be obtained only from the authorized website of the Commission or official social media handles. The elements spreading such misinformation are being closely monitored by the cyber cell and IT wing so that such rumors can be curbed in future.
The Uttar Pradesh Election Office has once again reiterated that conducting fair, free and transparent elections in the state is their top priority. The entire process of adding, deleting or amending names in the Voter List is done completely within the ambit of law through online and offline means, in which transparency is maintained at every step. If any citizen is facing any inconvenience in knowing the status of their application, then they can get the information directly through the official portal or helpline number. After this clear and strict stand of the Election Commission, this fabricated controversy related to deletion of 85 thousand forms has now been completely exposed, which proves that the misconceptions spread against constitutional institutions do not last long.
