A major and cowardly terrorist attack on the international airport located in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, has shocked the entire world. In this deadly attack using drones and missiles, an innocent Indian citizen has tragically died, while 11 other people have been seriously injured. At the time of this barbaric attack, there was heavy traffic of passengers and employees at the airport, due to which there was a sudden stampede and many people were left bleeding due to the shrapnel of the blast. Saudi security forces and air defense systems tried to intercept many projectiles in the air, but the debris and explosives of a drone fell directly near the civilian terminal and operational area of the airport, causing massive destruction. This innocent martyrdom of an Indian worker who had gone to a foreign land to earn his living has created a wave of grief and anger in India.
As soon as the news of this tragic incident was received, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of the Government of India has taken a very strict and strict stance. The official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi has condemned this terrorist attack in the strongest terms, calling it a blatant violation of international humanitarian laws and civil security. The Government of India clarified that targeting any civilian airport, common travelers and innocent workers is the most despicable form of terrorism, which cannot be justified under any political or military pretext. India expresses full solidarity with Riyadh against this direct attack on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia. Along with this, India has expressed its deep condolences to the family of the deceased Indian citizen and has instructed the Indian Embassy in Riyadh to provide all possible assistance to the victim’s family and to complete all legal arrangements to bring the body back home respectfully and quickly.
Immediately after the blast, the special disaster management team of the Indian Ambassador and High Commission in Saudi Arabia became active. Indian diplomats immediately contacted local Saudi authorities and hospitals where the injured are being treated.
-
Condition of the injured: The 11 injured, including citizens of several countries and local staff, are being treated under the close supervision of doctors in Riyadh’s top trauma centers and super specialty hospitals.
-
Helpline number released: The Indian Embassy has set up emergency helpline numbers and help desks to address the concerns of the Indian community living in Saudi Arabia, so that workers stranded in any untoward situation or in the absence of information can directly contact them.
-
Coordination with local administration: Embassy officials are in constant touch with the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority and the police department so that there is no hindrance in taking the remaining Indian passengers stranded at the airport to safe places and alternative flights.
Saudi Arabia is not only an important global energy supplier, but it is also home to the largest Indian expatriate population among the Gulf countries. Currently, more than 25 lakh Indians are employed in the construction, healthcare, IT, aviation and retail sectors in various cities of Saudi Arabia—Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Mecca and Medina. This attack is not just a bombing of an airport, but a direct attack on the security of millions of Indian workers living in peace and stability in the Gulf. Even before this, drone and ballistic missile attacks have been carried out from time to time on Saudi Arabia’s southern border areas, Abha Airport and Aramco’s oil refineries by Iran-backed Houthi rebels based in Yemen, in which many foreign citizens have lost their lives. But directly targeting the central international airport of the capital Riyadh at this level indicates a huge threat to the security system and a direct declaration of war.
India has not only condemned the attack but also urged the United Nations (UN) and global superpowers to take united action against forces sponsoring and arming terrorist attacks on civilian populations and critical infrastructure. Unless there is a strong international ban on the illegal proliferation of drone technology, cruise missiles and sea-mines, regional peace cannot be restored. This cowardly attack on Riyadh Airport has once again proved how the geopolitical flames smoldering in the Middle East are engulfing innocent workers and peace-loving citizens. India has bluntly said that now the global community will have to go beyond merely condemning words and take strict retaliatory action against this growing face of terrorism.
