A huge and historic change has been seen in the politics of Nepal. In the 15th General Conference of ‘Nepali Congress’, one of the oldest and leading political parties of Nepal, the command of the party has finally been handed over to a young and energetic face. In this important election held within the party, 50 year old youth leader Gagan Kumar Thapa has taken over the post of the new President of Nepali Congress by winning with a landslide and huge majority. This change is being seen as the beginning of a new era in Nepal’s politics.
Gagan Thapa registered a historic victory by a huge margin of 6,584 votes.
A total of 7,013 delegates took part in the leadership voting in the 15th General Conference of Nepali Congress held in Kathmandu. In the tough contest for the post of President, Gagan Kumar Thapa defeated his rival Shyam Krishna Khadgi and obtained a total of 6,584 huge votes, while Shyam Krishna Khadgi could get only 375 votes. At the same time, another contender in this contest, Kishore Singh Rathore, had already withdrawn his name. The election of Gagan Thapa as the party president with this huge majority makes it clear that the party workers now wanted a young and visionary leadership in the organization.
Unopposed election for Senior Vice President and other posts
Apart from the post of President, important changes have also been made in other top posts of the party. Gagan Thapa’s close aide and popular party leader Vishwa Prakash Sharma has been elected unopposed for the post of senior vice president. Apart from this, Pushpa Bhusal has been elected unopposed to the post of Women Vice President. There is an atmosphere of great enthusiasm among the workers due to the arrival of young and militant leaders on these top posts of the party. Through this general conference, a new Central Executive Committee with a total of 232 members will also be formed, which will determine the policies and strategies of the party in the coming times.
Late leader Pradeep Giri’s dream of ‘bullon pair’ fulfilled
There is a very emotional and interesting political history behind this new leadership of Gagan Thapa and Vishwa Prakash Sharma. In December 2021, the late and visionary leader of Nepali Congress Pradeep Giri had termed Gagan Thapa and Vishwa Prakash Sharma as a “pair of bulls” on a public platform. He had said that just as two bulls have to move together to plow a field, in the same way these two young leaders should together pull the chariot of the Congress Party forward. Today, the symbolic and visionary dream of late leader Pradeep Giri has come fully alive, with Gagan Thapa as President and Vishwa Prakash Sharma ready to guide the party as Senior Vice President.
