Rain became time! Roof of house collapsed amidst massive devastation in Pakistan, painful death of 7 year old innocent; many areas submerged

In neighboring country Pakistan, normal life has become completely disrupted due to sudden change in weather patterns and continuous torrential rains. Many tragic incidents of waterlogging and collapse of dilapidated buildings are coming to light due to rain. The most heartbreaking accident happened when due to heavy rain and dampness, the roof of an old residential house suddenly caved in and fell down. In this tragic accident, a 7-year-old innocent child died on the spot after being buried under the debris, while other members of the family were seriously injured. Hearing the screams, nearby local people reached the spot and immediately started the work of removing the debris. By the time the child was taken out from the debris, his breathing had stopped. This tragic incident has plunged the entire area into mourning and the victim’s family is in an uproar.

As soon as information about the accident was received, the local administration and disaster management and rescue 1122 teams immediately reached the spot. With the help of heavy machinery and cutters, rescue workers removed concrete and girder debris and rescued other trapped people. The injured who were rescued safely from the debris included women and elderly people, who were immediately admitted to the trauma center of the nearest hospital. According to doctors, the condition of two of the injured remains critical and they are undergoing intensive treatment. The local administration has expressed deep condolences to the victim’s family and has assured all possible financial and medical assistance. At the same time, the Meteorological Department and local officials have appealed to the citizens to avoid living in old and dilapidated buildings during heavy rains and take shelter in safe places.

Due to continuous rains, the situation has become extremely dire in many major cities, towns and low-lying residential areas of the country. Due to accumulation of several feet of water on the roads, the main roads have been completely submerged, due to which the traffic system has come to a standstill. Due to lack of timely cleaning of drains and sewage lines, dirty water has overflowed and entered people’s homes and shops, causing huge damage to household goods and commercial goods worth lakhs of rupees. In many areas, parked vehicles are seen floating in water. Due to heavy waterlogging, electric poles and transformers have been submerged in water, due to which the administration has completely stopped the power supply from many feeders in view of the possible short circuit and danger of electrocution.

Due to water logging and power cuts, millions of families are facing severe shortage of clean drinking water and basic amenities. People living in low-lying areas are forced to spend the night on the rooftops of their houses. The local administration is resorting to dewatering pumps to drain the water, but due to continuous rains and poor condition of the drainage system, efforts to drain the water are proving inadequate. Local business organizations and citizens have expressed strong anger over the failure of the Municipal Corporation and government departments. People say that every year before the monsoon and unseasonal rains, tall claims are made for drainage improvement, but the hollowness of the system gets exposed in the very first heavy rain.

The Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning of more heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning for the next 24 to 48 hours. According to the warning, due to the activation of western disturbances and monsoon winds, the water level in both the hilly and plain areas may increase further, due to which there is a serious risk of landslides in the hilly areas and flash floods in the plains. The Disaster Management Authority has instructed all concerned departments to be on high alert and keep emergency shelters ready. The general public has also been appealed not to leave their homes unnecessarily, maintain a safe distance from electric wires and poles and in case of any emergency, immediately contact the helpline numbers.
