In Sanatan culture and Hindu religion, these sixteen days of Pitru Paksha (Pitru Paksha 2026) are considered the most sacred period to show respect to our ancestors, express gratitude towards them and offer Tarpan and Pind Daan for the peace of their souls. According to religious beliefs, during this Mahakaal, which starts from Bhadrapada Purnima and continues till Ashwin Amavasya, our deceased ancestors come to earth in a subtle form among their relatives and expect that their descendants will offer them a portion of water and food. But if a person does not perform Shraddha, Pind Daan or Tarpan of his ancestors due to his busyness, carelessness or other reasons, then the ancestors become very angry. There is a clear mention in the scriptures and astrological texts that this displeasure of the ancestors manifests in the life of the family in the form of serious crises, obstacles and ‘Pitru Dosh’. The followers of Sanatan Dharma in the entire country including Uttar Pradesh know very well that if there is no blessings of the ancestors, then despite having all the comforts and luxuries in life, a person is always surrounded by problems. Let us know in this detailed article why ancestors get angry by not performing Shraddha and what adverse effects it can have on our lives.
According to Hindu mythology, as soon as a human being is born, he is bound by three types of debts – Dev Debt, Rishi Debt and Pitra Debt. Of these, the biggest and only means of repaying ancestral debt is the Shraddha ritual and Tarpan performed with full devotion during Pitru Paksha. When a family does not offer Pind Daan to their ancestors or part of the food on their date, the ancestors return hungry, thirsty and disappointed, hoping for their satisfaction. His disappointment and dissatisfaction turns into anger or rather resentment towards his family. It is even said in the scriptures that those who give trouble to their parents or ancestors while they are alive, and do not even offer prayers for them after their death, do not get relief from ancestral debt and face obstacles in their family lineage moving forward.
When the ancestors become angry with their family members, ‘Pitrudosh’ is formed in the horoscope, which has the potential to completely ruin the life of any person. Due to the effect of Pitrudosh, diseases persist in the family, expenditure on medicines increases and even doctors are not able to understand the true cause of the disease. Apart from this, there are internal conflicts at home, discord between brothers and sisters, tension in marital life and continuous obstacles in conceiving a child. It has been seen many times that despite tireless hard work and ability, youth do not get success in their careers, have to suffer huge losses in business and the debt burden keeps increasing. All this is the result of that invisible energy and dissatisfaction of the ancestors, which is very important to calm down in time.
This question must be coming in your mind that if a person is extremely poor, lives in a foreign country or is in a situation where he cannot perform the big ritual as per the formality, then will he also have to face this drawback? Answering this, Maharishi states in the Vedas and Shastras that even if you do not have money for expensive rituals, you can remember your ancestors with true emotion and devotion. According to the scriptures, if you face south every day during Pitru Paksha and offer a pot of water, some black sesame seeds and flowers in the name of your ancestors, or set aside a portion of food for crows, cows and dogs, then this also satisfies the ancestors. Apart from this, feeding or donating food to a poor or needy person also provides virtuous results of Shraddha, provided you do not have deceit or pretense towards them.
If unknowingly or due to the mistake of previous generations, your family is under the influence of Pitru Dosh or you have not been able to perform Shraddha regularly, then there is no need to panic because in Sanatan Dharma, there are many solutions for its atonement and prevention. On the day of Sarvapitri Amavasya, one should especially sit under the Peepal tree and offer water, milk, black sesame seeds and sugar and pray for the peace of one’s ancestors. Apart from this, donating clothes, food and umbrellas to the poor and doing charity for one’s ancestors by taking bath in a holy river reduces the effect of Pitru Dosh to a great extent. Reciting chapters of Bhagavad Gita regularly in your home or serving the poor is also a great way to provide peace to the souls of ancestors.
In short, our ancestors are the strong foundation of our life, and if the foundation becomes weak then it becomes difficult for the building to stand. During these days of Pitru Paksha, it is our biggest duty to remember our ancestors, perform Shraddha and show respect towards them. If we turn away from this duty, then we ourselves have to face the troubles that come in life. In this Pitru Paksha, let us offer prayers to our ancestors with full devotion, express our gratitude towards them and with their blessings make the life of our family full of happiness, prosperity and peace.
