Today’s Panchang, October 2: Vyatipat and Variyaan Yoga on Saptami Shraddha, know the auspicious time of Bhadra, Rahukaal and Tarpan.

Saptami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month is being celebrated with devotion and faith today on 2nd October. This holy time of Pitru Paksha (Mahalaya) is considered to be the biggest opportunity to express gratitude towards our ancestors, forefathers and the departed. On this day, Shraddha, Tarpan and Pind Daan are performed for those ancestors who died on the seventh day of Krishna or Shukla Paksha of any month. According to astrological calculations, special astronomical yogas like Vyatipat and Variyaan are being formed today, which are considered to have deep spiritual impact in Sanatan traditions and rituals.

Since morning, on the banks of all the major pilgrimage sites and holy rivers of the country including Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Haridwar and Gaya Ji, devotees have been offering sesame, kush and Ganga water to appease their ancestors. By doing charity and Brahmin feast on this day, one gets freedom from Pitra Dosh and one gets the blessings of happiness, prosperity and increase in progeny in the family.

Today, Friday, October 2, the combination of planets and constellations is having a special impact from the spiritual point of view:

  • Sunrise: 06:15 am

  • sunset: 06:04 pm

  • Position of the Moon: Moon will transit in Taurus sign day and night.

  • Position of the Sun: Sun God is seated in Virgo.

  • Paksha and Samvat: Ashwin Krishna Paksha, Vikram Samvat 2083, Shak Samvat 1948

  • Date: Saptami Tithi of Ashwin Krishna Paksha (after this Ashtami Tithi will start).

  • constellation: Mrigashira Nakshatra (after this Ardra Nakshatra will enter).

  • sum: There will be influence of Vyatipat Yoga in the first part of the day and Variyaan Yoga thereafter.

  • Karan: Vishti (Bhadra) Karana, after which Bava and Balav Karana will be in effect.

During Pitru Paksha, Shraddha ritual is never performed in the morning or evening. According to the scriptures, when the Sun shines in the afternoon, the Shraddha performed in ‘Kutup’ and ‘Rouhin’ Muhurta reaches the ancestors directly:

  • Kutup Muhurat: From 11:47 pm to 12:35 pm (this is the best time to start Shraddha).

  • Rauhina Muhurta: From 12:35 pm to 01:23 pm (Pind Daan and Tarpan are extremely fruitful during this period).

  • Afternoon time: From 01:23 PM to 03:45 PM (time of completion of Brahmin feast and Panchabali karma).

There is a special rule of ‘Panchabali’ during the Shraddha ritual, in which the first portion of the food is offered to the cow (Gobali), the second to the dog (Shwanabali), the third to the crow (Kakabali), the fourth to the Devadi and the fifth to the ants (Pipilikadi). Only after this, food is offered to Brahmins or the needy with devotion and Dakshina and clothes are presented.

Before starting any auspicious or auspicious work on this day, it is mandatory to keep in mind the inauspicious Choghadiya and Rahukaal:

  • Rahukaal: From 10:42 AM to 12:11 PM (Avoid starting any new work, transaction or journey during Rahukaal).

  • Yamgand: From 03:09 pm to 04:38 pm.

  • Gulik period: From 07:44 am to 09:13 am.

  • Abode of Bhadra: Today, there will be influence of Bhadra (Vishti Karan) in the first half of the day. Due to Bhadra being in the underworld or heaven, its side effects are considered to be zero for the inhabitants of the earth, however, caution is taken in performing worldly auspicious works. No prohibition of Bhadra applies to daily ancestral rituals like Shraddha and Tarpan.

  • Abhijeet Muhurat: From 11:47 AM to 12:34 PM (This is the most sacred and dosha-free Muhurta of the day).

  • Vijay Muhurta: From 02:09 pm to 02:57 pm.

Today, a large number of devotees are gathering for Saptami Shraddha from the Gomti coast in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, to Sangam in Prayagraj, Manikarnika-Dashashwamedh Ghat in Kashi and Gaya Tirtha located on the banks of Falgu river in Bihar. According to religious beliefs, if a person does not remember the date of death of his ancestor properly, then he can perform tarpan as per the rituals on the Saptami of Ashwin Krishna Paksha or on the upcoming Sarvapitri Amavasya.

On this day, by wearing black sesame seeds, barley flour, raw cow’s milk, white flowers and sacred Kush in the ring finger and offering it facing south, the ancestors of three generations get satisfied and bestow the boon of health and mental peace to their descendants.
