In Sanatan culture and religious traditions, this entire fortnight of ‘Pitru Paksha’ is considered the most sacred period of expressing gratitude towards our deceased ancestors and forefathers. According to the Hindu calendar, every year during these 16 days from the full moon day of Bhadrapada month to the new moon day of Ashwin month, people perform Pind Daan, Tarpan, Brahmin feast and Shraddha rituals for the peace of their ancestors. However, in today’s modern, hectic and busy life, many times it happens that due to job, business or other family commitments, people are not able to perform Shraddha with full rituals, presence of pundits and complex rituals. In such a situation, there remains a worry in the minds of people that if the ritual is not completed, will their ancestors get angry or will they not get the results of Shraddha? According to religious experts and astrology, even if you are short of time or resources, you can easily satisfy your ancestors through your true devotion and some very simple measures. Let us know in detail in this article that in the absence of complete rituals, in which simple ways ancestors can be remembered and worshiped during Pitru Paksha 2026.
Your true devotion matters more than the lack of rituals in Pitru Paksha.
It is clearly said in the scriptures that in any religious ritual or worship, the feeling of a person’s heart and his sacred devotion are more important than the show or big events. If you live in a metropolitan city, have time restrictions or are financially unable to organize a Brahmin feast on a large scale, it does not at all mean that your ancestors will get angry with you. Ancestors are only hungry for love, respect and a moment’s remembrance from their children. During these 16 days of Pitru Paksha, if you remember your ancestors with a true heart and do some virtuous work in their name, then that too is accepted with the same completeness as any big ritual. Therefore, instead of having any kind of inferiority complex or guilt in mind, one should remember one’s ancestors with complete positivity.
First simple solution: face south with reverence and offer tarpan and water.
If you are unable to perform big yagya or complex rituals, you can perform water tarpan at your home in a very simple way. During these days of Pitru Paksha, after taking bath in the morning, take pure water in a copper or brass pot, add a little black sesame, barley, kusha and Ganga water to it. After this, stand in a quiet corner of your house or in the puja room facing the south direction, because the south direction is considered the direction of the ancestors. Now take water in both your hands and slowly release it on the ground or in a vessel. Remember all your known and unknown ancestors in your mind and ask for forgiveness from them for your mistakes and seek blessings for the happiness and peace of your family. This very short and simple remedy satisfies your ancestors immediately.
Second simple solution: Panchabali Karma i.e. giving part of the food to cow, dog, crow and ants.
In the Sanatan tradition, great importance has been given to ‘Panchbali Karma’, which is very easy for every householder. Whenever you prepare fresh and pure food in your home, before consuming the food, take out a small portion of it for five different living beings. In this, the first bread is taken out for the cow, food for the dog, a portion for the crows, sugar or flour for the ants and a portion for a needy or guest. During Pitru Paksha, feeding food especially to crows, cows and dogs is considered a medium to directly convey their energy to the ancestors. It is believed that our ancestors come in these different forms and accept the food given by us, which makes them extremely pleased and bestow blessings.
Third simple solution: Donation of food, clothes and medicines to the poor and needy.
Charity is considered to be the destroyer of all sins and the most satisfying solution to the ancestors. If you are unable to feed the Pandits or perform a big Shraddha, then during these 16 days of Pitru Paksha, according to your capacity, you can go to a poor person, leprosy patients, orphanage children or old age home and donate food, fruits, raw rice, pulses, umbrella or needed clothes. If you wish, you can also help in the medical expenses or medicines of any needy person. When you help a hungry person and a prayer comes from his mouth, that energy reaches your ancestors directly. While donating, keep in mind that this material is reaching the needy from your ancestors.
Fourth simple solution: Lighting a lamp under the Peepal tree and reciting Geeta.
Peepal tree is considered the most sacred of all trees in Sanatan Dharma and the abode of gods and ancestors. During Pitru Paksha, every evening or especially on Amavasya and Chaturdashi dates, a lamp of mustard oil or pure ghee should be lit under the Peepal tree planted in a nearby temple and three rounds of the tree should be done. Also, if possible, sit in your home and recite the ninth chapter of Bhagavad Gita or mentally chant Gayatri Mantra or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra for the peace of your ancestors. All these spiritual activities provide salvation and divinity to the souls of your ancestors. This fortnight of Pitru Paksha may be full of rituals, but with your devotion and these small measures, your ancestors can be completely satisfied and bless your entire family with lifelong happiness and prosperity.
