In Sanatan Dharma, Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month is considered very sacred and fruitful. on this Ekadashi Parivartini Ekadashi, Padma Ekadashi, Jaljhulani Ekadashi Or Dol Gyras Known as. The biggest spiritual and mythological significance of this day is that Lord Shri Hari Vishnu, who is absorbed in Yoga Nidra for four months in Kshirsagar, changes his sleeping posture on this date, that is, he turns from one side to the other. Due to ‘Parivartan’ (change of direction) this holy date was named Parivartini Ekadashi.
This question often comes in the minds of the devotees that why does Lord Vishnu change sides only on this special day and what is the deep mythological and philosophical basis behind it.
In religious texts and Puranas (especially the Bhavishya Puranas), Lord Vishnu’s turning is linked to the demon king Bali and the Vamana incarnation of the Lord.
According to the legend, when the philanthropist demon king Bali established his dominance over the three worlds and all the gods including Devraj Indra got scared and took refuge in Lord Vishnu, then Shri Hari took the fifth incarnation in the form of dwarf Brahmin ‘Vaman’ from the womb of Goddess Aditi. Lord Vaman arrived at King Bali’s yagya and asked for only three paces of land from him as donation. Despite the warning of demon guru Shukracharya, Bali resolved to give three paces of land to Vamana.
Lord Vaman assumed his huge Trivikram form. In one step he measured the entire earth and the underworld and in the second step he took the entire heaven under his control. When there was no space left to place the third step, the pious King Bali without any hesitation put his head forward and asked that the third step be placed on his head. God was extremely pleased with this unique devotion and integrity of Bali. He made Bali the king of the underworld (Sutal Lok).
When Bali started going to the underworld, he asked for a boon from Lord Vishnu that the Lord should reside in the underworld in front of him day and night. Bhaktavatsal Lord accepted Bali’s request and became his gatekeeper.
On the day of Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi (Devshayani Ekadashi), Lord Vishnu goes into Yoga Nidra on the bed of Sheshnag in Kshirsagar to keep the promise given to King Bali and to maintain the balance of the universe. this period Chaturmas (a period of four months), in which Lord Shiva takes charge of the management of the universe.
