Currently, a historic box office competition is being witnessed in Indian theaters between two completely different films. On one hand, after hoisting its flag in the world of OTT, the crime-thriller ‘Mirzapur The Movie’, which landed on the big screen, is attracting the audience to the theatres, on the other hand, the film ‘Hanuman Ansh’, inspired by the divine life and Sanatan faith of Neem Karoli Baba, is performing record breaking even after 37 days of its release. There is a competition between the two films to attract the audience at the ticket window. The initial figures of Saturday have surprised even the trade pundits, because even on the sixth Saturday, the wave of faith seems to be overshadowing the stardom of the crime drama.
Made under the banner of Excel Entertainment and starring the powerful characters of Pankaj Tripathi and Ali Fazal, ‘Mirzapur The Movie’ has strengthened its hold in the theatres. After winning the hearts of the audience on OTT platform Prime Video, this film, which was released on the big screen, proved its strength by taking a bumper opening of Rs 25.75 crore on the very first day. The impact of Kaalin Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit and Munna Bhaiya’s Bhaukaal among the audience was such that the film did a huge net business of Rs 148.45 crore in its first week itself.
Entering the second week, the film collected Rs 9.50 crore on the eighth day i.e. Friday. After this, on Saturday, the 9th day, a good crowd of viewers was recorded in multiplexes and single screen theaters of North India since morning. According to data from trade tracker Sacanilc, till 6 pm on Saturday, ‘Mirzapur The Movie’ has collected Rs 4.93 crore. With this, the total domestic net earning of the film has now touched the figure of Rs 162.88 crore. The total theater occupancy of the film in the afternoon and evening shows on Saturday was recorded at around 31.0 percent, which is considered quite strong for the second week.
On the other hand, the film ‘Hanuman Ansh’, which emerged as the biggest miracle at the box office, has destroyed all the old formulas of business analysts. Usually, where any Bollywood or South film dies in its second or third week, ‘Hanuman Ansh’ has not allowed its earning pace to slow down even on the 37th day. The box office journey of this film is no less than a fairy tale. The film, which started with a very modest collection of just Rs 10 lakh on the first day, collected only Rs 1.08 crore in the first week.
Even in the second week, the film’s earnings were very sluggish and it could collect only Rs 40 lakh. But what happened next shocked the cinema world. Due to the tremendous word of mouth publicity of the general audience on social media and the engagement of the devotees of Neem Karoli Baba, there was an unexpected jump in the film’s earnings from the third week. In the third week, the film earned Rs 10.40 crore, while in the fourth week its collection directly reached Rs 61 crore. In the fifth week, there was such a flood of faith that the film did a record net business of Rs 90.25 crore.
On Saturday, when ‘Mirzapur The Movie’ was busy strengthening its ninth day collection, ‘Hanuman Ansh’, running on its 37th day, once again won. According to Sacknilk, till 6 pm on Saturday 37th, ‘Hanuman Ansh’ recorded a net collection of Rs 6.96 crore at the domestic box office, which is about Rs 2 crore more than the earning of ‘Mirzapur The Movie’ in the same period.
Not only this, the total theater occupancy of ‘Hanuman Ansh’ on Saturday was recorded at 45.0 percent, which clearly shows that even in the sixth week, families and young audiences are lining up at the ticket window to watch this film. After the addition of this latest earning, the total net collection of the film has reached Rs 180.59 crore (Early Trends 179.21 to 180.59 crore).
According to a detailed report by film trade portal Koimoi, ‘Hanuman Ansh’ has now become the all-time highest-grossing blockbuster in the 113-year history of Indian cinema. Made on a very limited budget of just Rs 1.8 crore, the gross collection of this film has now crossed the milestone of Rs 200 crore. With this figure, the total return on investment (ROI) of the film has exceeded 11,000 percent.
With this extraordinary achievement, ‘Hanuman Ansh’ has also broken the 51-year-old unbroken record of the historical religious film ‘Jai Maa Santoshi’ released in 1975. ‘Jai Maa Santoshi’ was till now considered to be the most profitable low-budget religious film of Indian cinema, but ‘Hanuman Ansh’ based on the life philosophy of Neem Karoli Baba has now taken that record in its name.
At the box office, the balance between the modern action of ‘Mirzapur The Movie’ and the spiritual message of ‘Hanuman Ansh’ has made cinema owners proud. On one hand, while the desi attitude of Pankaj Tripathi’s Kaalin Bhaiya and Ali Fazal’s Guddu Pandit is attracting the youth towards theatres, on the other hand, the saga of Neem Karoli Baba with its Sanatan culture, sacrifice and Kainchi Dham is connecting the elderly, women and entire families with the big screen. Trade experts believe that there will be a big jump in the collections of both the films on Saturday night and Sunday holiday, which will set new standards of earning at the box office this week.
