In Sanatan Dharma, Amavasya Tithi is considered to have special spiritual and religious significance, in which there is a provision for peace of ancestors, tarpan and worship of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. The Amavasya date of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month is known as Pithori Amavasya or Kushgrahini Amavasya, which is considered extremely important for married women and mothers observing fast for the birth of a child. There is special importance of worshiping Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha on this day so that the long life and bright future of the children can be wished for. Along with this, by meditating the ancestors on Amavasya Tithi and doing charity for them, all the troubles of life go away and one gets freedom from Pitra Dosh. However, it is considered mandatory to follow some special rules on this holy day, because even the slightest carelessness or wrong action can spoil the happiness and peace of your home and cause the displeasure of the ancestors. If you are also going to fast or worship on the day of Pithori Amavasya, then you should know in detail about all its important rules and prohibited actions so that you can get the full results of the worship.
According to the Panchang, the festival of Pithori Amavasya is counted among the most important festivals of the year, because many religious rituals are performed simultaneously on this day. By taking bath and donating on this day, one attains virtue and gets freedom from sins committed unknowingly. According to religious beliefs, on the day of Pithori Amavasya, Mother Parvati had told Indrani the importance of this fast, due to which the mother was blessed with worthy children. This is the reason why women in many parts of the country observe Nirjala or fruit fast for the health, longevity and happiness of their children. Apart from this, there is also a tradition of collecting Kush grass on this day, which is used in auspicious works, Shraddha and rituals throughout the year. Bathing in holy rivers on this day purifies both body and soul, which increases the circulation of positive energy and attains mental peace.
According to religious texts and astrological beliefs, negative energies are more active on the day of Amavasya, hence doing certain tasks is strictly prohibited during this period. The first rule is that on this day one should not insult any poor, helpless, elderly or woman, because by doing so both Goddess Lakshmi and ancestors get angry. Apart from this, one should not consume tamasic food like meat, liquor, garlic and onion on the day of Pithori Amavasya, because this day is completely dedicated to Satvik worship and restraint. Cutting hair and nails or shaving is also considered inauspicious on this day, hence these tasks should be completed a day before Amavasya. Any kind of debate, discord or negative talk should be avoided in the house, because in the house where there is unrest, the ancestors never reside there and they cannot be satisfied.
The day of Pithori Amavasya is considered best for the satisfaction of ancestors, hence Tarpan, Pind Daan and Brahmin food have special significance on this day. If there is Pitra Dosh in your family or you are repeatedly facing failure and problems in life, then on this day at noon, you should face the south direction and offer tarpan by mixing black sesame seeds, kusha and flowers in water in the name of your ancestors. Along with this, by lighting a mustard oil lamp under the Peepal tree and circling it, one gets the blessings of the ancestors and also gets relief from the bad effects of Rahu-Ketu. On this day, it is considered very auspicious to feed a hungry person, cow, dog or crow, because by doing so one gets the virtue of donating food and the ancestors get satisfied and give blessings. Doing charity removes poverty from the house and the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi always remain.
On the day of Pithori Amavasya, one should wake up before sunrise and take bath in a holy river. If it is not possible to go to the river, then mix a little Ganga water in the water at home and take bath. After bathing, wear clean clothes and start your day by offering Arghya to the Sun God. After this, clean the house temple or place of worship thoroughly and sprinkle Ganga water there and spread a yellow or red cloth on a post and install the idol or picture of Mother Parvati, Lord Ganesha and Shiva. There is a tradition of making figures of various Gods and Goddesses from flour or pitthu and worshiping them, hence it is called Pithori Amavasya. Offer suhaag material, fruits, flowers, incense, lamp and naivedya to the mother and recite or listen to the vrat katha. At the end, perform Aarti and ask for forgiveness for your mistakes and pray for the happiness and prosperity of your family, which will remove all the troubles from your life and you will get the desired results.
