Many times, deadly pests like stem borer, pod borer, fall armyworm and fruit fly destroy the entire crop, due to which farmers have to face huge financial losses. To protect against pests, the cost of farming for farmers also increases significantly due to purchasing expensive and poisonous chemical pesticides from the market.

With the aim of eliminating this serious problem of farmers and promoting Integrated Pest Management (IPM), the Agriculture Department has ‘Plant Protection Material Distribution Scheme’ On crop protection kit under Huge subsidy up to 75 percent Has taken a historic decision to give. With this government initiative, eco-friendly modern bio-traps and protection kits will be made available to farmers at very nominal prices, which will not only protect crop production but will also save extra expenditure on pesticides.

Traditionally, indiscriminate spraying of poisonous chemicals in the fields reduces the fertility of the soil and also kills friendly insects. As a solution, the government is providing subsidized ‘crop protection kits’ consisting of modern biological and eco-friendly traps.

Under this scheme, mainly 3 types of modern safety equipment are being given to farmers at 75% subsidy:

1. Pheromone Trap Set: It is equipped with a special type of lure (scented attractant), which attracts harmful male moths and insects and traps them in the trap. Due to this, the reproductive cycle of insects is broken and there is a huge decline in the number of insects in the field.

2. Sticky Traps (Yellow & Blue Sticky Traps): It is a bright yellow and blue colored sticky sheet, which attracts flying sucking insects (such as whiteflies, thrips, aphids and aphids) and sticks to them.

3. Fruit Fly Trap: It is especially effective in controlling fruit flies in fruit orchards (mango, guava, litchi) and vine vegetables (gourd, cucumber, pumpkin, ridge gourd).

The Agriculture Department has included pulses, oilseeds, cereals and vegetable and horticulture crops under the scope of this scheme:

• Paddy: 75% subsidy will be given on pheromone trap sets for the control of stem borer and leaf roll insect in paddy crop.

• Maize: There will be huge discounts on special pheromone kits for the prevention of ‘Fall Armyworm’, which causes the most damage to the maize crop.

• Gram and Pigeon pea (Pulses): Protection kit will be made available to eradicate Pod Borer insect of gram.

• Vegetables: Subsidy kit will be valid for the control of stem and fruit borer of brinjal, leaf miner of tomato, diamond back moth (DBM) of cabbage and cauliflower.

• Fruits and Horticulture: Traps will be provided on a large scale to prevent fruit borers and flies in the orchards of mango, guava, papaya, banana and litchi.

Under the scheme, the government will directly bear 75 percent of the total cost of the crop protection kit as subsidy, while the farmer will have to contribute only 25 percent from his own pocket.

For example, if the total estimated cost of a pheromone trap set for pest management in an acre of field is around ₹400 to ₹600, then the direct subsidy being given by the government ranges from ₹96 to ₹170 per set (maximum ₹500 to ₹850 per acre). The farmer gets a protection kit for the entire one acre crop at a nominal cost of just ₹100 to ₹150. A farmer can get a subsidized kit for a maximum of 2 to 5 acres depending on the area of ​​his land holding.

To avail the benefits of this scheme, farmers have to fulfill the following mandatory conditions:

• The applicant should be a native of the state and a genuine farmer.

• The farmer must have his own agricultural land or must have valid sharecropper/lessee registration.

• It is mandatory for the farmer to be registered on the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT Agriculture Portal) of the Agriculture Department.

• In the scheme, priority will be given to small and marginal farmers and women and SC/ST category farmers.

• For application, it is necessary for the farmer to have Aadhar card, bank account linked to Aadhar, mobile number and updated land receipt (Khatauni/LPC).

After verification, subsidized kits will be distributed directly to the selected farmers through the nearest block/block agriculture office or authorized service providers.
