Bharatiya Janata Party’s national spokesperson and MP Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi has sharply retaliated against the statements given by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Manusmriti and patriarchal mentality. During an interview, Sudhanshu Trivedi has given a unique challenge to Rahul Gandhi by surrounding him in a maze of facts and arguments. He sarcastically said that if the Congress leader really wants to end patriarchy, then he should remove his father’s surname from his name and add his mother’s name and call himself ‘Rahul Maino’.
Direct challenge to Rahul Gandhi on claims of patriarchy
Sudhanshu Trivedi questioned the ideological logic of Rahul Gandhi in which he alleged the influence of patriarchy in Indian culture and traditions. Taking a dig, the BJP MP asked why Sonia Gandhi herself uses the surname of her husband Rajiv Gandhi? He said in a challenging tone that if there is so much desire to end patriarchy, then Rahul Gandhi should drop his father’s surname and name himself ‘Rahul Maino’, taking a reference to Antonia Maino. Trivedi further said that those who do not consider the evil practices like Hijab, polygamy, and triple talaq as patriarchy, but term Sanatan Dharma with concepts like ‘Yatra Naryastu Pujyante’ and Shiv-Shakti as patriarchal, they are ideologically prejudiced.
Questions on the original copy and historical context of Manusmriti
While talking about the existence of Manusmriti and its history, Sudhanshu Trivedi raised the question that where is the original copy of Manusmriti available in today’s time? He claimed that William Jones, who came from England in 1783, learned Sanskrit in one year and translated Manusmriti into English in 1784. Along with this, he cited the old statements of Mahatma Gandhi and the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Trivedi said that Mahatma Gandhi had said in a letter written on May 4, 1928 that he considered many things in Manusmriti to be commendable, although in its present form some interpolations may have been added later. Similarly, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru had also honored the contributions of Manu and Yajnavalkya in his statements in the Parliament in May 1955.

The BJP MP, while attacking the Congress party, said that books of commentaries on Manusmriti were published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in collaboration with Indira Gandhi government in 1972 and Rajiv Gandhi government in 1985. He quipped that today Rahul Gandhi is bent upon proving wrong the views of his father, his grandmother, his great grandfather Nehru, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. Sudhanshu Trivedi finally made a serious allegation and said that it appears that the ideological control of the Congress Party has now completely gone into the hands of people with ‘ultra left’ ideology, who have completely hacked the mental and political discourse of Rahul Gandhi.
