Amidst the ongoing fluctuations in crude oil prices in the international market, Indian Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) like Indian Oil (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) have today released the official retail prices of petrol and diesel for August 22. There has been no major change in fuel prices at the national level, but due to VAT and local transportation costs, the price of petrol remains above ₹ 100 per liter in most major cities of the country including the national capital Delhi.

The prices of 1 liter petrol and diesel in major cities of the country today are as follows:

• New Delhi: Petrol ₹102.12 per liter Diesel ₹95.20 per liter

• Mumbai: Petrol ₹111.21 per liter Diesel ₹97.83 per liter

• Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh): Petrol ₹101.86 per liter Diesel ₹95.36 per liter

• Kolkata: Petrol ₹113.51 per liter Diesel ₹99.82 per liter

Why do prices differ in different states?

In India, excise duty is imposed on petrol and diesel by the central government, while each state government collects value added tax (VAT) and cess at its own level.

Additionally, dealer commission and freight charges are added depending on the distance the fuel is transported from the oil refinery or depot to the petrol pump. This is why fuel is cheaper in Union Territories like Andaman-Nicobar or Chandigarh, whereas in Telangana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Kerala and Bihar, petrol is being sold at ₹111 to ₹115 per liter due to high state VAT.

New rates are decided every day at 6 am

The ‘Dynamic Fuel Pricing’ system is implemented in India, under which oil companies update the prices of petrol and diesel daily at 6:00 am on the basis of 15-day average price of crude oil on international standards and the exchange rate of rupee against dollar.
