Relationships and relations have great importance in human life, and among these too, friendship is a relationship which a person chooses of his own free will. You find many such people in the world who are seen standing with you in times of happiness, but when the mountain of difficulties and sorrows falls in life, they disappear like the wind. Acharya Chanakya has thrown very deep light on every aspect of human life in his famous Niti Shastra i.e. Chanakya Niti. The things he said centuries ago about the identity of friends are as relevant and accurate in today’s modern era as they were then. In today’s fast-paced life and selfish world, it becomes very difficult to identify which person is our true well-wisher and who is associated with us only for his own selfishness. According to Acharya Chanakya, the real test of any person’s life is in times of crisis, and this is the test where the difference between true and false friends becomes clearly visible.
1. A true friend is the one who stands by you in times of disaster and crisis.
The first and most important rule of Chanakya Niti teaches that the real test of a true friend always comes during bad times or disaster. According to Acharya Chanakya, when a person has wealth, prosperity and comforts, then there is a wave of sycophants and selfish people around him. At such times, everyone tries to portray themselves as close to you. But when there is a serious crisis in life, illness strikes, financial crisis or you get caught in some big legal trouble, then the person who stands with you like a rock without any selfishness is your only true friend. Those people who stay with you during happy days but turn away as soon as trouble comes, they can never be yours and the sooner you distance yourself from them, the better.
2. A companion who encourages you in times of illness and fear.
There come many moments in life when a person falls seriously ill physically or becomes extremely frightened and depressed mentally. Acharya Chanakya says that in such difficult and sensitive times, the friend who comes to you and asks about your well-being, takes care of you and consoles you to move ahead in life, is a real sympathizer. On the contrary, people who turn a blind eye to your suffering or try to take advantage of your helplessness are friends only in name. A true friend is one who removes your fears and makes you realize that you are not alone, rather he stands shoulder to shoulder with you in this fight.
3. A person who does not back down in times of famine, calamity and social crisis.
Since ancient times, famine, natural disasters or major calamities caused by the state have been counted among the biggest crises. Acharya Chanakya believes that when the entire society or the entire country is going through a major disaster or crisis, and in such a situation, the person who does not leave you, comes forward to help you even at the risk of his life, he is the one who completely fulfills the religion of friendship. At such times, people often try to save their lives and pursue selfishness, but a true friend considers his friend’s crisis as his own crisis, regardless of his own. According to Chanakya Niti, one should never let such crisis companions go away from one’s life because such people are found very rarely and fortunately.
4. A guide who gives honest and correct advice when needed.
Often people like such friends who keep saying yes to everything they say and never make them realize their mistakes. But Acharya Chanakya has completely opposite views. According to him, a true friend is the one who clearly tells you your shortcomings to your face instead of talking bad about you behind your back. The person who praises you even on every wrong thing you do and keeps you in the dark, is your biggest enemy because he is pushing you towards destruction. On the contrary, the friend who is not afraid to use strong words to bring you on the right path and shows you a mirror for your well-being is your biggest well-wisher and guide.
5. A person who always keeps personal secrets and weaknesses confidential.
Trust is the strongest foundation of any relationship, and its importance increases even more in friendship. Acharya Chanakya clearly says that a true friend never makes fun of your weaknesses, your hidden secrets or your failures nor exposes them to others. If there is someone with whom you have shared all the things in your heart and your shortcomings, and he keeps those things limited to himself with complete honesty and confidentiality, then you can trust him blindly. On the contrary, those so-called friends who make fun of you or try to humiliate you by spreading your words to others are your biggest enemies with whom you should immediately break the relationship.
6. A friend who has love and dedication without any selfishness or expectation.
In today’s materialistic era, most of the relationships are based on some kind of transaction or selfishness. People like to befriend only those with whom they have some personal benefit. But Acharya Chanakya believes that true friendship is the one in which there is no room for any kind of selfishness, greed or expectation. The friend who loves you unconditionally, is genuinely happy in your happiness and is never jealous of your success, is the richest person in the world who has such a priceless gem. Chanakya Niti teaches us that more important than increasing the number of friends is that there should be only a few people in your life on whom you can bet everything of your life. If you identify your friends by testing them on these 6 criteria, then you will never have to become a victim of deception and mental distress.
