In Sanatan Dharma, Navratri, the great festival of Shakti worship, is considered a very sacred and fruitful time dedicated to the nine forms of Goddess Durga. During this period, devotees strictly follow fasting, worship, Ghatasthapana and Satvik rules for the entire nine days. According to religious beliefs, Navratri is not limited to just eating fruits or fasting, but there is a provision to take special precautions regarding many activities related to daily life during this holy period. There are many strict rules mentioned in the scriptures and folk traditions regarding the use of needle, thread, scissors or any sharp object during the nine days of Navratri. It is believed that even a small mistake committed unknowingly during these auspicious days of worship can deprive you of the full benefits of the fast and can spread negative energy in the house.
According to mythological beliefs and tradition of elders, sewing of any kind of clothes, tinkering or joining cut and broken things with needle and thread is completely prohibited during the nine days of Navratri. The main religious logic behind this is that sharp metal objects like needles and scissors are considered a symbol of ‘violence’ and ‘cutting’, whereas the festival of Navratri is a symbol of creation, love, purity and peace. During the worship of Maa Durga, touching or using any object that pricks or cuts is considered to hinder auspicious works. Additionally, the act of cutting clothes and pricking the needle during sewing creates negative vibrations in the house, which can affect the sattvik atmosphere of worship.
According to experts in astrology and fasting rules, one should not use needle and thread during Navratri especially during Abhijeet Muhurta, Sandhi Puja time, afternoon time and evening aarti. Apart from this, in houses where Akhand Jyot has been lit or Ghatasthapana (urn installation) has taken place, moving needle and thread and sewing clothes can cause wrath of the Goddess. According to beliefs, using needle and thread during Navratri brings sourness and bitterness in the relationships among the family members, the work done starts getting spoiled and there are obstacles in economic progress. This is the reason why in traditional families, all the work related to sewing or sewing improvement is completed even before the start of Navratri.
If for some reason or unknowingly you use a needle and thread during Navratri, then there is a provision in the religious scriptures for asking for forgiveness. In such a situation, light a lamp in front of Goddess Durga and seek forgiveness for your mistake and chant the mantras of Goddess Durga. However, if a person is a tailor professionally and his livelihood depends on this work, or if very important work comes in an emergency situation, then in such a situation the person can work with a virtuous mind after completing the puja, but one should avoid doing this work near the main time of puja and the place of installation of the Kalash. It is very fruitful to take care of these small things to get the blessings of Mother Durga on the holy festival of Navratri.
