Students’ anger flared up in Ranchi: Police took strict action for breaking barricades during assembly siege

In Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi, the ongoing students’ movement against alleged irregularities and rigging in competitive examinations has now taken a very violent form. A heated clash was witnessed between thousands of young job aspirants and the police who came to surround the assembly with their various demands. The situation went completely out of control after the protesters defied the tight security arrangements and tried to move ahead by breaking the police barricades. To control the situation, the police had to resort to water cannons, tear gas shells and finally lathi charge. After this entire incident, the administration has now taken strict action and registered FIR against about 600 protesters under named and unknown sections.

What is the whole matter and why did the students take to the streets?

Thousands of students have been protesting on the streets for the last several days against the alleged irregularities, paper leaks and corruption in government jobs and various competitive examinations (like JPSC and JSSC) in Jharkhand. The students demand that transparency should be brought in the examinations and a high level or CBI inquiry should be conducted into the entire matter. In this sequence, on Monday, when the protesting students were marching towards the Assembly in support of their demands, the police had deployed heavy security forces on many main roads of the city and strong barricades were made to stop them.

Situation worsened after breaking of barricades and police action

As soon as the crowd of students reached near the security cordon and barricades put up by the police, the tension between the two sides increased significantly. The enraged protesters broke several barricades one after the other and tried to move forward. The police first used water cannons and tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and stop them from moving forward, but when the situation started going out of control, the police had to use force. Many students and policemen also suffered injuries during this clash. After the health of some prominent student leaders leading the movement deteriorated, they had to be admitted to the hospital.

Police took strict action, case registered against 600 people

Ranchi Police has now started tightening the noose in this matter of huge disturbance, violation of security rules and breaking of barricades on the assembly road. According to the information received from police officials, FIR has been registered against a total of 600 people in connection with this violence and illegal demonstration. About 100 protesters have been named in this, while 500 other unidentified students and others are included. Police are busy identifying the miscreants on the basis of video footage and other evidence, due to which more arrests are expected in the coming days.

Temperature heated up in political circles and attack from opposition

After this entire incident, the political activity in Jharkhand has intensified. Opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other organizations have strongly condemned the lathi charge on students by the police. Opposition leaders allege that such barbaric use of force on peaceful and unarmed students who were raising their voice reflects the dictatorial attitude of the government. On the other hand, the state government and administrative officials say that it is the responsibility of the administration to maintain law and order and protect government property, and this legal step was taken out of compulsion after the crowd broke the rules.
