A very shocking and new trend of admission has emerged this year in technical education institutes and engineering colleges across the country. Leaving behind the dominance of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical, which were once considered core branches, a particular engineering stream has become the first and most preferred choice of students. If we analyze the data of admissions from the country’s leading technical universities and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to local level private colleges, it becomes clear that 4 out of every 10 students are taking admission in only this one field. Due to this bumper demand, an atmosphere of tussle and tough competition has been created in colleges to get this seat.

New era of computer science and AI: Why are students going crazy?

According to technical experts and career counselors, Computer Science Engineering and its modern specializations like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Data Science have currently captured the entire education market. In today’s modern era, seeing the speed with which the technology of generative AI and automation is progressing, more than 40 percent of the students are seeing their secure future in this sector. This is the reason why Computer Science seats get completely filled in the very first round of counselling.

Bumper placements and high-paying salary packages are the biggest attractions.

Veterans from the world of education and IT industry believe: “It is very natural for students to be inclined towards this branch. In the current global market, most of the high-paying jobs are coming out in IT and tech companies only. Compared to other core engineering fields, Computer Science freshers get a better starting package. Apart from this, due to the work from home (WFH) facility and global exposure, the youth of Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are making it their first priority.”

Seeing the demand, many big universities have started new sections of AI and Data Science by reducing seats in traditional courses.

Counseling of local engineering colleges and states was also deeply affected.

Talking about geopolitical and local (Geographical Education Hubs) level, the same trend is being seen strongly in major state counseling boards like AKTU of Uttar Pradesh, IP University of Delhi, COMEDK of Karnataka and MHT-CET of Maharashtra. Locally, the cut-offs for this Computer Science and AI branch have gone historically high in colleges located around tech-hubs like Lucknow, Noida, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad. Experts advise that students should choose this core or specialized field only after testing their genuine interest and aptitude in coding instead of just joining in sheepishly.
