Imagine you say to your smartphone’s AI assistant, “Book the cheapest flight from Mumbai to Delhi for next Tuesday.” Your AI assistant not only shows you the flight options, but also chooses the best and cheapest option, fills in your passenger details and also makes the payment from your bank account. You neither have to fill any form, nor scan QR code nor enter your secret UPI PIN.
This is not the story of a science-fiction film, but a revolutionary change in India’s digital payment system. Today Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents can find options for online shopping or flight booking, but when Unified Payments Interface (UPI) When it comes to final payment through , this process stops. This is because as per security rules, only users and registered payment apps (like PhonePe, Google Pay) can do UPI transactions, not any AI agent.
But this obstacle is going to be removed very soon. The organization that operates UPI in India National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is working on a groundbreaking system, named Unified Agent Protocol (UAP). Let us understand in detail how this technology will work and what it means.
Why can’t AI make payments directly at present?
The UPI ecosystem currently has great features like ‘Auto-Pay’ and ‘Reserve Pay’. With their help, users put recurring payments (like Netflix, OTT subscription or electricity bill) into automatic mode by setting a certain spending limit and once authenticated with their UPI PIN.
But this system does not give freedom to an AI agent to take independent purchasing decisions in the market and make new payments on behalf of the user in his absence. To bridge this technical and legal gap, ‘Unified Agent Protocol’ (UAP) is being developed by NPCI. It is a proposed digital framework to securely verify and authorize AI agents within the UPI network.
What kind of change will come from UAP? What will happen to the existing UPI?
According to an exclusive report by ‘Business Standard$’, UAP is being designed to be a highly reliable, generic and interoperable infrastructure.
-
Verification Layer: UAP will not replace the existing UPI system. Instead, it builds a Security and Verification Layer Will be added as.
-
No change in infrastructure: With its arrival, there will be no major changes in India’s existing payment infrastructure. This will provide the payment ecosystem with a tool to 100% verify, just before the transaction is processed, that the concerned AI agent is acting with the genuine consent of the user and within the set limits.
Understand in simple language: How will this entire system work?
Although the complete details of this technology have not yet been officially made public, but according to technical experts, the flow of its functioning ($Flow$) could be something like this:
[यूजर का निर्देश] ➔ [AI असिस्टेंट द्वारा बेस्ट ऑप्शन का चुनाव] ➔ [पेमेंट रिक्वेस्ट जनरेशन] ⬇ [पेमेंट का स्वतः निष्पादन] ⬅ [UPI नेटवर्क पर ट्रांजैक्शन] ⬅ [UAP द्वारा AI क्रेडेंशियल्स का वेरिफिकेशन]-
Command: The user will assign a task (like grocery or ticket booking) to his AI assistant.
-
Process: The AI assistant will compare options on the internet, choose the best deal and generate a digital payment request.
-
Verification: in this stage UAP layer Will be active. It will immediately check whether the AI agent sending the request is registered, trusted and authorized by the user or not.
-
Final Payment: If verification is successful, the request will go to UPI. Depending on the rules, either a ‘One Tap Approval’ pop-up will appear on the user’s screen, or in case of pre-approved small limit payments, the transaction will be completed automatically without any PIN or human intervention.
Will AI get full access to your bank account?
The first fear that arises on hearing the name of this technology is whether AI can empty our entire bank account? So the answer is- no way.
Although the final framework is yet to be announced, given the stringent security standards of RBI, this system will work like the existing autopay.
-
Spending Limit: Instead of granting unlimited access to their bank account, users will be able to pre-approve a daily or per-transaction spending limit (e.g. a maximum of ₹2,000) for their AI agent.
-
Accountability and Security: The proposed protocol will have a provision that if any AI agent violates its set limits, the transaction will be immediately blocked and it will be held accountable. Keep in mind that before making UAP live in India, NPCI Reserve Bank of India (RBI) It will be mandatory to obtain final security clearance from.
New security challenges and threat of cyber fraud
Just as technology makes human work easier, cyber criminals and hackers also find ways to misuse it.
-
Agent Hijacking: If a user’s AI assistant becomes infected with a malware or bug, fraudsters can make illegal purchases in the user’s name without his or her knowledge.
-
Initial Risks: Since this technology is still in its early stages globally (Agent AI), there are many new debates and apprehensions in the financial world regarding consumer protection and data privacy.
Why is this technology a historic step for India?
If this Unified Agent Protocol (UAP) of NPCI is successfully implemented, India can become the first country in the world to have ‘Agentic Payments’ There will be an official and national level digital infrastructure for. This will transform India’s glorious UPI from a system that you and I operate manually with our fingers today, to a next-generation system where our trusted AI robots can safely execute financial transactions for us.
