If we look at the total production of ginger in India, the figures are very attractive. The total production of ginger in the country during the year 2022-23 was recorded at around 24.31 lakh metric tonnes, while in 2023-24 this figure was around 23.33 lakh tonnes. According to agricultural experts, tropical and subtropical climate is considered best for ginger cultivation. This cash crop requires moist, fertile soil with excellent drainage, a temperature of 20 to 30 degrees Celsius and adequate rainfall or irrigation to grow optimally. India is not only its largest producer but also a huge consumer and exporter. Especially in the case of dry ginger, the Indian market has a reputation all over the world. Big countries like America, UAE, Bangladesh, UK and Saudi Arabia buy ginger in huge quantities from India, due to which the country earns crores of dollars of foreign revenue every year.

According to the official data of the Union Agriculture Ministry, the highest ginger producing state in India is Madhya Pradesh. In the year 2022-23 alone, Madhya Pradesh had produced a record more than 5.44 lakh tonnes of ginger. Madhya Pradesh’s share in the total ginger production of the entire country was 22.39 percent, which makes it the top producing state in the country. Even within Madhya Pradesh, Chhindwara district has achieved the distinction of ‘Ginger City’ of the country due to its bumper production and huge local trade markets. Most of the fresh ginger is supplied from Chhindwara to other states of India and international markets. Recently, the North-Eastern state of Mizoram has also been praised by NITI Aayog as the ‘Ginger Capital of India’ due to its premium and medicinal quality GI-Tagged ginger, where ginger remains the first choice of global pharma companies.

Karnataka and Odisha also ahead in the race, know the condition of other states

Karnataka comes second after Madhya Pradesh in the major production of ginger. Karnataka contributes a major share of about 20 percent to the total production of the country due to its modern and mechanized farming. After this, Odisha is at third place with 9 percent share. Apart from these top three states, ginger is also cultivated on a large scale in the hilly areas of other parts of India like Assam, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Sikkim, Kerala and Meghalaya in the best and organic manner. Talking about Madhya Pradesh, the favorable soil and advanced irrigation facilities of districts like Barwani, Indore, Khargone and Chhindwara have changed the fortunes of the farmers here.
