Today, on June 25, 2026, ‘Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat’, considered the biggest and most difficult of the year, is being observed with full faith and devotion across the country. There is a belief in Hindu Sanatan Dharma that this Ekadashi is the best and most fruitful among all the 24 Ekadashis of the year. It is said about this Mahavrat which has been going on since the Mahabharata period, that if a devotee is not able to keep the fast on the Ekadashis coming every month, then by keeping the fast on only this one Nirjala Ekadashi, he can get the virtuous results of all the Ekadashis together. The blessings of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu remain throughout the year on the devotees who perform penance with complete devotion on this day.
Since this fast is observed without consuming food or water (Nirjal), it is very challenging to observe it in this scorching heat of Jyeshtha month. In such a situation, many times the fast is broken due to the person drinking water unknowingly or by mistake. As soon as the fast is broken, many types of doubts and questions start arising in the mind – like will Lord Vishnu get angry? Will there be any big problem in life? Astrology and Puranas have suggested some very simple and effective ways to deal with such a situation and seek forgiveness from God.
Mahavrat is being observed today on Udaya Tithi.
According to the exact calculation of Drik Panchang, the Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month has started from 06:12 pm on 24th June and will end today on 25th June at 08:09 pm. According to the rules of the scriptures, in view of the recognition of Udaya Tithi, this difficult Nirjala fast is being observed today from sunrise on 25th June. This morning, after taking bath in Brahma Muhurta, the devotees meditated on Lord Vishnu and resolved to fast.
If Ekadashi fast is broken by mistake, do not panic
According to the scriptures and most revered sages and saints, Lord Vishnu is more hungry for the true feelings and dedication of the devotee than for external actions or harshness. If a person observes a fast only for show and has deceit in his mind, then that fast can be right only for health, not for devotion. On the contrary, if you are devoted to Lord Vishnu with a true heart and unwavering faith and due to extreme thirst or by mistake you inhale a sip of water, then the Lord never gets angry with His devotee. Instead of getting panic (upset) over unintentional mistakes, have a feeling of remorse in your mind and adopt the measures given below.
Do these 5 astrological remedies immediately if your fast is broken
If you have accidentally broken the rule of Nirjala Ekadashi today, then you can please Shri Hari and get forgiveness by following these religious rituals:
-
Praying for forgiveness after being bound: First of all, light a ghee lamp in front of the idol or picture of Lord Vishnu in the puja room. Fold your hands and say, “O Lord! I have committed this mistake due to ignorance and my fast has been broken, please accept this human mistake of mine and forgive me.”
-
Continuous chanting of Mahamantra: Do not lose your mental balance after breaking the fast and spend the whole day with a pure mind. “Invocation and Obeisance to Lord Krishna” Keep chanting the mantra continuously in your mind. This mantra removes defects.
-
Vishnu Sahasranama or Geeta Recitation: Sit at one place with a calm mind and recite ‘Vishnu Sahasranamam’, a collection of 1000 names of Lord Vishnu or listen to Srimad Bhagavad Gita. This removes negativity from the environment and mind.
-
Donation to Brahmins and the needy: In the scriptures, charity has been said to be the best way to get rid of the evil of fasting. If the fast is broken, then this evening or the next morning, donate seasonal fruits, a pitcher (kalash) filled with water, sattu or grains as per your capacity to a worthy Brahmin or a poor person.
-
Good conduct and calm mind: Even after breaking the rules, do not let the spirit of fasting go from your mind. Maintain virtuous conduct for the remaining part of the day—like not getting angry at anyone, not telling lies, and avoiding speaking ill or gossiping about anyone.
In case of unbearable thirst, you can drink water with this special method.
If your health starts deteriorating due to heat during Nirjala Ekadashi or your throat starts getting dry due to intense thirst, then there is a special emergency rule mentioned in the scriptures, which saves life and also does not incur the blame of breaking the fast:
-
When you have a strong desire to drink water, first calm down and chant the mantra of Lord Vishnu. “Om Namo Naraynay” Chant it 21 times with full devotion.
-
After this, take a clean silver or brass plate or vessel and pour some pure drinking water into it.
-
Be sure to add a few drops of holy Ganga water to this water.
-
Now bend down with both your knees and both hands on the ground (in animal posture) and drink the water directly through your mouth.
According to the scriptures, consuming water in this particular posture and method is not directly considered as ‘drinking water’, rather it is only called moistening the throat. With this remedy, your Nirjala Ekadashi fast remains completely safe and is not considered broken.
