Monday, June 22, is going to be a day of relief for the people living in the national capital Delhi and surrounding areas (Delhi-NCR). The people of Delhi, who have been facing the record breaking heat and heat wave since the beginning of June, will get a big relief from the change in weather today. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert of rain with thunderstorm, storm and strong winds in Delhi for Monday. Due to this change in the weather, there will be a huge drop in temperature and people will get freedom from the scorching sun.

The sky will be cloudy, there will be light rain with thunder

According to the latest bulletin of the Meteorological Department, the sky will be partly cloudy in most parts of Delhi and NCR on Monday. There is a strong forecast of very light to very light rain with strong thunderstorms, lightning and thunder during the day.

Talking about temperature, today the maximum temperature of Delhi is expected to be between 37 degrees to 39 degrees Celsius, due to which the mercury will remain below the psychological level of 40 degrees. At the same time, the minimum temperature at night is expected to be between 26 degrees to 28 degrees Celsius, due to which the nights will also be quite cool and comfortable.

Wind gusts will blow at a speed of 60 km per hour, IMD issued advisory

Meteorologists have warned that the weather may take a very aggressive form in Delhi-NCR on Monday. During this period, strong surface winds will blow at a speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, which in some areas can suddenly increase into dangerous gusts of 60 kilometers per hour.

In view of the inclement weather, the administration and IMD have issued a special advisory for citizens:

  • Caution in travelling: Before leaving the house, check the weather conditions and control the speed while driving.

  • Distance from trees: During a storm, do not under any circumstances take shelter under weak balconies, hoardings or big trees, because there is the highest risk of them falling due to strong winds.

The weather remained pleasant even on Sunday, mercury was under control

Due to western disturbance and changing wind patterns in North-West India, the effect of heat has reduced in Delhi in the last two-three days. Even on Sunday, the weather in the capital remained quite pleasant and the mercury remained below 40 degrees Celsius.

According to official data, Delhi’s maximum temperature on Sunday was recorded at 38.9°C, which was just 0.3 degrees above this season’s normal average. The minimum temperature was 28.8°C. It is a matter of relief that the relative humidity was recorded at only 39% on Sunday morning, which means that the humidity in the air was much less as compared to last week, which gave people relief from the sweaty heat.

Delhi’s air becomes clean, air quality index reaches ‘moderate’ category

The direct positive effect of rain and strong winds has also been seen on the climate of Delhi. According to the latest data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) improved to 127 on Sunday, which falls in the ‘Moderate’ category.

According to Pollution Control Board standards, an AQI between 101 and 200 is considered ‘moderate’, while a reading between 51 to 100 is considered ‘satisfactory’. The Meteorological Department estimates that due to the monsoon rains in the coming days, this index may further improve and reach the ‘satisfactory’ category. According to IMD, this entire week will be characterized by cloud movement and intermittent showers, due to which the peak level of heat in Delhi will not return for now.
