A very shocking case has come to light from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. In just a few days, the police has exposed the sensational theft of jewelery worth more than Rs 4 crore that took place on June 12 in the prestigious Tanishq Jewelery showroom located at Raj Nagar District Center (RDC) of Kavinagar police station area. The police have arrested a 23-year-old employee of the showroom, his girlfriend and her father on charges of this high-profile robbery. Police have also recovered about 2 kg of stolen gold (worth approximately Rs 3.1 crore), ₹6.5 lakh cash and an illegal weapon from the accused.
‘Ishq, Shaadi aur Dacoit’… this is how the showroom was cleaned in just 25 minutes.
The story that has emerged during police interrogation is no less than a film script. The arrested main accused Nitin Verma (23) used to work in Tanishq showroom. Nitin and his fiancee Kajal Verma (22) were going to get married soon, but they did not have money for the grand preparations and future expenses of the wedding. To make their marriage luxurious, both of them together prepared a masterplan of theft worth crores.
Only one and a half month had passed since Nitin joined the showroom, but in such a short time he had inspected every nook and corner of the store. He knew very well in which part of the showroom the most precious diamonds and gold jewelery were kept.
‘Daroo party’ given a day before the theft, this is how the keys of the locker were stolen
To commit the theft, Nitin organized a grand party for his fellow employees on the night of 11 June. In the party he told everyone that his marriage with Kajal has been confirmed and in this happiness he is giving a treat to everyone. According to the investigating officers, Nitin’s real target was showroom cashier Gautam Raj, who had the keys to the store.
Nitin played a trick and made cashier Gautam drink alcohol beyond limits. When Gautam gets completely drunk, Nitin shows sympathy and offers to drop him home. Finding an opportunity on the way, Nitin took away the keys of the main shutter and locker of the showroom from Gautam’s bag without him knowing.
Left the ground floor and went straight to the first floor; Act captured in CCTV
The next morning (June 12) at around 7 am, Nitin reached the showroom with another of his vicious associates. According to a Times of India (TOI) report, in the CCTV footage, both the accused were seen casually opening the shutters with the original keys and going inside. Since Nitin was fully aware of the layout of the showroom, he did not even touch the ground, second or third floor. They went straight to the first floor where the most expensive gold, diamond and gemstone jewelery was kept.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Dhawal Jaiswal said that the accused carried out the entire incident in a very clever manner within just 25 minutes. After collecting jewelery worth more than Rs 4 crore, the accused fled in their car parked away from the showroom. During this time, one of his friends was standing outside and doing Reiki.
One guard on goods worth Rs 50 crore; Serious flaws found in showroom security
This high-profile theft has also exposed the security arrangements of Tanishq showroom. Police investigation revealed that jewelery worth more than Rs 50 crore was present in the showroom, yet no sensor or alarm system was installed there. There was only one security guard deployed at night, who left after finishing his duty at 7 in the morning and the thieves took advantage of this free time. Although live monitoring of CCTV cameras was being done from the company’s head office, when the thieves were committing crimes inside, no security personnel noticed them.
Junkyard father started selling jewellery, police caught him like this
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Suryabali Maurya, the theft was planned by Nitin and Kajal, while Kajal’s father Sanjay Verma (52) was given the responsibility of disposing of the stolen jewelery and selling it in the market. To escape from the police, the accused were selling this gold in the market at very low prices and were deceiving the customers that they urgently needed the money for the treatment of someone’s illness at home.
As soon as information about cheap gold was received, the police team became active and arrested all three. Police have recovered 2 kg of gold and cash from them. An FIR has been registered against the three accused under serious sections like theft, criminal conspiracy and Arms Act. Police say that raids are going on to recover some other accomplices involved in the crime and the remaining jewellery.
