El Niño Set to Disrupt India’s Monsoon; World Meteorological Organization Issues Major Warning El Nino will spoil the monsoon game in India, World Meteorological Organization issues major warning of danger

Amidst the onset of monsoon in India, meteorologists from all over the world have released a scary report, which has increased the concern of the farmers and the general public of the country. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on Tuesday issued a very serious and new update regarding El Nino and issued a big warning at the global level. An extremely dangerous pattern of El Nino is becoming active due to the rapidly increasing influence of warm water in the Pacific Ocean. Scientists clearly say that due to this seasonal change, there will be a deep and devastating impact on the traditional pattern of temperature and rainfall across the world, due to which severe heat wave, drought and unexpected weather related events may increase rapidly in the coming months.

Danger up to 80 percent between June and August, India’s monsoon will be very weak

According to this latest report of WMO, the probability of El Nino becoming fully active in the Pacific Ocean between the months of June and August has been found to be more than 80 percent. After this international estimate, it is now considered almost certain that the performance of the south-west monsoon in India this year may be very weak and disappointing. Along with this, the entire month of June will be much hotter and scorcher than normal in most parts of the country, as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had already made clear in its initial forecasts. Although there is still some uncertainty in many weather models about the actual speed and exact timing of El Nino, most global models are predicting it to be at least moderate to severe.

El Nino will continue till November, crisis looms over sowing of Kharif crops

The biggest concern of meteorologists is that this year the effect of El Nino will not be limited only to the beginning of monsoon. WMO has clearly said in its report that there is more than 90 percent strong possibility of this El Nino continuing till the coming month of November. This simply and clearly means that it is going to have a very bad impact on the entire south-west monsoon season (June to September) of India. This time is very important for the rural areas and agricultural sector of India, because during this time, sowing of main Kharif crops (like paddy, maize, soybean) is done on war footing across the country. Due to reduction in rainfall, the farmers of the country may have to suffer huge losses.

El Nino included in the five strongest in history, will cause havoc from oceans to land

Celeste Saulo, Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization, has given a very shocking statement underlining the seriousness of this global crisis. He said that the recent El Nino of the year 2023-24 had proved to be one of the five strongest and most destructive El Nino patterns ever recorded in the history of meteorology. Due to this dangerous effect, the entire world faced record-breaking and deadly global temperatures in the year 2024. The organization has given very strict instructions to the governments around the world including India to be fully prepared in advance to deal with the dangers of severe drought, sudden heavy unseasonal rains, deadly heat wave and increasing heat waves in both marine and land areas in their respective countries.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan called an emergency meeting, instructed farmers to be alert

Seeing this international warning raised from the Pacific Ocean and the seriousness of the situation, the Indian Government has also immediately come into full action mode. Under the high-level chairmanship of Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, the Agriculture Ministry called an emergency high-level meeting to review the preparedness of the country’s food security and agricultural system. During the meeting, the Agriculture Minister assured crores of farmers of the country and said that the situation is definitely challenging, but there is no need for anyone to panic. He has given strict instructions to the farmers to be extremely alert, keep an eye on the weather forecasts and continuously work in strong coordination with the Central Government and other related agricultural agricultural science centres, so that its impact on the agricultural sector can be reduced.
